Description
Kotetsu T. Kaburagi, known by his hero alias Wild Tiger, is a veteran NEXT superhero in the fictional, corporate-sponsored city of Stern Bild. Born on an unspecified date in the southern islands of the nation, he comes from a family of craftsmen who run a traditional dyeing workshop. Kotetsu married his childhood friend Tomoe Kaburagi, but she died of an illness when their daughter Kaede was very young, leaving him as a single father. His mother, Anju Kaburagi, helps raise Kaede while Kotetsu works as a hero.

Personality-wise, Kotetsu is brash, hot-blooded, and idealistic, with a strong moral compass that prioritizes saving lives over scoring points or pleasing sponsors. He tends to act before thinking, often leading to collateral damage, which frustrates his corporate handlers. Despite his reckless exterior, he is deeply empathetic, sentimental, and stubbornly dedicated to the old-fashioned notion of heroism as a public service rather than a reality TV performance. He has a habit of calling his signature catchphrase during rescues and often jokes or uses lighthearted banter to defuse tension, but he also carries a quiet melancholy from the loss of his wife. He struggles with insecurity about his aging and decreasing physical abilities, though he hides this behind bravado.

Kotetsu’s primary motivation is to protect innocent people and to be a hero that his daughter Kaede can be proud of, even as she grows distant due to his demanding career. He also seeks to honor Tomoe’s memory by continuing to help others, as she had encouraged him to pursue heroism. Over time, he becomes motivated to prove that traditional hero values still matter in a commercialized system, and to guide younger heroes away from cynicism.

Within the story, Kotetsu serves as the seasoned but undervalued veteran hero for the struggling company Apollon Media. Initially dismissed as a “rusty” has-been due to his declining popularity and rising property damage costs, he is forced into a paired-hero system with the brilliant but aloof Barnaby Brooks Jr., forming the titular duo Tiger & Bunny. Kotetsu’s role is that of the emotional heart and moral anchor of the hero community, often challenging the system’s corporate logic with personal sacrifice.

Key relationships include his partnership with Barnaby Brooks Jr., which begins with mutual resentment—Barnaby sees Kotetsu as an amateur, while Kotetsu finds Barnaby cold and arrogant. Through shared missions, Kotetsu’s persistence and kindness break through Barnaby’s walls, and they become trusted friends and equals. Kotetsu also maintains a fatherly rapport with the younger heroes, particularly the fiery Karina Lyle (Blue Rose), who eventually develops a crush on him, and the tech-savvy Ivan Karelin (Origami Cyclone). His relationship with his daughter Kaede is central: he hides his hero identity from her for years, leading to tension, but eventually she discovers the truth, and he struggles to balance fatherhood with heroism. His bond with his mother Anju is one of mutual respect and gentle nagging, as she wants him to settle down but supports his calling.

Kotetsu undergoes significant development. Initially clinging to outdated methods out of pride and fear of obsolescence, he learns to accept teamwork and rely on Barnaby. After a major arc where his NEXT power—originally “Hundred Power,” which grants him superhuman strength for one minute—begins to weaken and then fluctuates unpredictably, he faces the possibility of retiring. He eventually accepts that his legacy is not about raw power but the inspiration he provides. He matures into a mentor figure, willingly stepping back when necessary, and reconciles his hero work with being a present father to Kaede, ultimately revealing his identity to her and earning her understanding.

Notable abilities: Kotetsu’s NEXT power is temporarily augmenting his physical strength by a factor of about one hundred, usually lasting only one minute per activation, with a cooldown period. Later, due to overuse and aging, the duration becomes unstable—sometimes lasting only a few seconds or not activating at all. He is also highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, having trained in martial arts before becoming a hero. Unlike many heroes who rely on high-tech suits for mobility, Kotetsu’s Wild Tiger suit includes basic enhancements like grappling hooks and protective padding, but he primarily uses his physical prowess and improvisational tactics. He possesses remarkable endurance, pain tolerance, and a keen situational awareness that sometimes surpasses younger heroes, allowing him to spot rescue opportunities they miss.
