Description
Masakaki is a mysterious and flamboyant figure who appears to individuals in moments of financial desperation, offering them substantial loans with their own future as collateral. He serves as the herald and agent of the Eastern Financial District, a parallel realm where entrepreneurs known as Entres battle using a special currency called Midas Money. Masakaki introduces the protagonist, Kimimaro Yoga, to this world and acts as a liaison between the Entres and the higher powers of the Financial District, which he refers to as taking orders from above.
In terms of personality, Masakaki is disconcertingly cheerful and childlike, often teleporting unexpectedly into someone’s personal space, grinning, and speaking with an unsettling glee. He can also appear sinister and untrustworthy, deliberately obscuring his true intentions behind a mask of whimsy. His demeanor suggests a deep amorality; he treats the economic destruction and personal tragedies caused by the Deals as mere transactions, neither helping nor hindering any side. He remains neutral throughout the conflicts, though he occasionally provides cryptic guidance or items, such as the Darkness card he gives to Kimimaro.
Masakaki’s background is largely unknown. He claims to work for the Midas Bank and appears to be an avatar or embodiment of the Financial District itself, possessing supernatural abilities like teleportation and control over space-time within the district. His motivations are never fully revealed, but he seems to exist solely to maintain the flow of the financial system, seeking out new “markets” even after the events of the series conclude. He does not undergo any personal development; instead, he remains a constant, chaotic force that highlights the cyclical and predatory nature of the Financial District.
His key relationships are primarily transactional. He recruits Kimimaro and other Entres such as Soichiro Mikuni, but he does not form emotional bonds with them. He acts as the point of contact for the system, often appearing to announce Deals or deliver cryptic messages. While he gives Kimimaro a powerful tool that proves crucial to resolving the story’s central crisis, it is done without clear allegiance, reinforcing his role as an agent of entropy rather than a friend or enemy.
Notable abilities include his effortless teleportation, the ability to appear and disappear at will, and a seeming immunity to the rules that govern Entres. He can also manipulate the fabric of the Financial District, appearing to bend time and space to his whims. His true power is implied to be limitless, but he rarely uses it directly, preferring to let the Entres play out their own Destinies.
