OVA
Description
Hermit, whose real-world identity is Touha Tanagami, is a ten-year-old boy who exists within the online game The World R:X as a strange, cat-like character. His avatar is a small, purple and white furred creature with yellow eyes, cat ears, and a tail, wearing green armor and a matching hat. This unique and illegal-looking appearance sets him apart from standard players and hints at his unnatural origin. He always carries a small black stick, a cheat item that grants him access to a number of powerful system commands and abilities beyond those of a normal player.
Hermit's background is the central mystery of the story. Seven years prior to the events of.hack//Quantum, Touha Tanagami was an American citizen of Japanese descent hospitalized with an unspecified illness, possibly a form of immunodeficiency. After he died, his father had his body cryogenically frozen and his mind digitized, placing his consciousness into a digital prison typically used for criminals. His first memory in this new existence was waking up in the cat avatar, alone and holding his twig, which he believed gave him the powers of a wizard. Within the game, his experience was a nightmare; because his consciousness was directly linked, he could feel real pain from every attack and "died" countless times, only to respawn in a hidden area.
Personality-wise, Hermit is a complex figure, driven by a deep loneliness and a desperate yearning for connection. He presents a mysterious, often playful, and childish demeanor, but this masks a profound sadness and a fearful core. Having been alone for so long, he craves friendship more than anything, which leads him to become intensely attached to the first person who shows him kindness, namely Sakuya. However, his desperate situation and isolation have also given him a very grey morality. He becomes driven and will do anything to accomplish his goal, leading to selfish and destructive actions without fully considering the consequences for others. When faced with the apparent futility of his long search, he can throw violent, child-like tantrums, destroying his surroundings in blind anger. Despite these darker tendencies, he remains good at heart, and his fierce loyalty to his friends ultimately compels him to try to undo the harm he has caused.
Hermit's primary motivation is survival and the desire to escape his prison-like existence. He discovered a way to hack into the implant chips that hold players' personal genetic information, allowing him to search for a compatible donor for his real-world body. His role in the story begins when he meets Sakuya, a player whose friend Mary has fallen into a coma after being player-killed. Initially, he appears as a mysterious ally, but it is eventually revealed that he is the one who has been corrupting players and trapping their consciousness in a giant corpse-tree after PK-ing them, all in an effort to find a genetic match. His quest for a donor, and his own forgotten death, are the main catalysts for the events of the series.
The key relationship in Hermit's existence is with Sakuya. Upon meeting her, he finally becomes happy for the first time in his digital life. He quickly becomes attached, viewing her as his first and only true friend. This bond is given a tragic weight when it is discovered that Sakuya is a compatible donor for his illness, explaining his strange pull towards her. It is his affection for her that ultimately forces him to confront his actions, and he chooses her to be the one to delete him and end his suffering. Other key relationships include his informant, Geek, whom he hires to make a new data list, and the player Shamrock, who helps Sakuya uncover the truth behind his identity.
Hermit experiences significant development over the course of the three-episode OVA. He begins as a lonely child with no memories before waking up in The World, ruthlessly pursuing his goal of finding a donor without regard for the people he hurts. He learns the devastating truth that he actually died over seven years ago, which sends him into a spiral of despair and rage. This revelation causes him to lash out destructively, unleashing his corrupted data on The World in a suicidal rampage. However, his connection to Sakuya provides a path to redemption. He ultimately accepts his fate and asks her to delete him, finding peace in their final moments together. In the end, it is revealed that he was not truly dead but in cryostasis, and with Sakuya becoming a donor, he is given a second chance at life, allowing him to return to The World to play with his friends.
Hermit's most notable abilities are derived from his illegal cheat item, a small black stick that functions as a wizard's tool. This item allows him to use powerful system commands that can erase other players' cheat items, repair damaged areas in the game world, and hack into the game's core data. He also possesses a list that can hack players' personal information to read their haplotypes, which he uses to search for a genetic donor. His unnatural connection to The World allows him to feel pain, but also means he cannot truly die, always respawning in a specific, hidden location. His power over corrupted data eventually becomes so great that he can summon data bugs, control other players' corrupted avatars, and even animate massive monsters to do his bidding.
