Description
Kaori Tanaka is a fifteen-year-old girl who lives in the quiet village of Sotoba and serves as a supporting character. She is the childhood best friend of Megumi Shimizu, although this friendship is one-sided. Kaori remains genuinely warm and loyal to Megumi, seemingly unaware that her friend has grown to secretly resent her and the other villagers.
Kaori has a kind and friendly personality, but she is also notably timid, which makes the horrifying events that unfold in her village especially devastating for her. As the once-familiar residents begin dying and returning as shiki, Kaori is overwhelmed by an intense and paralyzing fear. Yet beneath her gentle exterior lies a core of inner strength that eventually surfaces. She lives with her brother Akira and her pet dog, Love. Her initial motivation is simply to survive the escalating nightmare, but as she and her brother begin investigating the strange occurrences, she becomes more actively involved.
Kaori's role in the story is tied to her relationships with several key characters. Her loyalty to Megumi leads her to grieve deeply for her friend, even though the sentiment was not returned. She and her brother Akira become the first to notice that Natsuno Koide has been bitten by a shiki and try to warn his father, though their warnings go unheeded. Her connection with Natsuno deepens over the course of the story, and he becomes a source of quiet support for her, watching over her from a distance during her most perilous moments.
Kaori undergoes significant development. Her family is directly targeted when Megumi, jealous of her growing closeness to Natsuno, attacks and turns Kaori's father into a shiki. When her father returns to their home to attack the family, Kaori, in a moment of shocked and emotionless self-defense, beats him to death. This act of brutal necessity marks a major turning point. Later, her fear becomes so absolute that she gives up all hope, believing her death is inevitable. In one of the most poignant displays of her despair, she goes to the village temple, having already dug her own grave, to request a posthumous name for herself because she is certain she will be killed next. This action demonstrates a profound psychological shift from passive fear to a kind of morbid acceptance and readiness. Despite this, Natsuno later observes with satisfaction that she never stopped fighting for her survival.
Kaori does not possess any supernatural or physical abilities. Her most notable strengths are her loyalty, her capacity for deep care, and the courage she finally finds within herself to confront the monsters that were once her neighbors and her own father.
