Description
Michiru is a supporting character in the anime Air. She appears as a young girl with reddish pink hair and orange-yellow eyes, standing about 145 centimeters tall and weighing roughly 39 kilograms. Her background is rooted in tragedy: she is not a living human but a wandering spirit who witnessed the trapped Winged Maiden and decided to help a lonely girl on Earth. That girl is Minagi Tohno, whose mother had suffered a miscarriage and had planned to name the unborn child Michiru. Taking the form of that lost baby, Michiru manifests as a physical being to cheer Minagi up and bring her happiness.
Personality-wise, Michiru is boisterous, loud, and energetic. She loves to eat and play, and her favorite pastime is blowing bubbles with Minagi, though she is not particularly skilled at it. She is eccentric and quick to pick fights, especially with Yukito, whom she charges into and knocks over every time they meet, initially treating him like an enemy. Despite this combative exterior, she is deeply caring and devoted to Minagi, acting as a younger sister and best friend. Her primary motivation is to see Minagi smile and to remind her that she is herself, not the replacement for her lost sister that their mother sometimes treats her as. Michiru is the only person who consistently reinforces Minagi's true identity.
Her role in the story is central to Minagi's arc. She provides companionship and levity, but her true purpose is revealed when Minagi's mother regains her memories: Michiru is a dream-like fragment, a spirit that assumed the appearance of the miscarried child. Once Minagi becomes happy and makes other friends, Michiru explains that her work is done, bids farewell, and vanishes. Later, Minagi learns that her father's new baby is named Michiru and looks exactly like the spirit, suggesting a reincarnation or continuation. Michiru's development moves from a pesky, playful child to a poignant figure who sacrifices her own existence for the sake of someone else's well-being. She has no overt supernatural powers beyond her ability to exist as a tangible spirit, but her influence stems from her unwavering love and loyalty. Her relationships are defined by her bond with Minagi, her sisterly affection, and her rivalry-turned-friendship with Yukito.
