Description
Azusa Hanai is a first-year student and the captain of the Nishiura High School baseball team. He is the tallest member of the team, standing at 181 cm, and has a shaved head, though this is often hidden by his cap. As a player, he is right-handed and holds multiple positions, primarily serving as the right fielder and the cleanup hitter, but he is also capable of acting as a relief pitcher or catcher when necessary.

Hanai comes to Nishiura with a solid baseball background, having been the cleanup hitter and captain of his middle school team. His deep interest in the sport was fostered from a young age by his mother, an avid baseball fan. Initially, he was reluctant to join the newly formed Nishiura team. This hesitation stemmed partly from a disillusionment with his past baseball experiences and partly from skepticism about having a female coach, Maria Momoe. His doubts were quickly dispelled when Coach Momoe demonstrated her exceptional athletic ability and strength, earning his immediate and lasting respect. After a subsequent challenge from catcher Takaya Abe, Hanai formally joined the team and was soon unanimously voted by his peers to serve as their captain.

Personality-wise, Hanai is level-headed, observant, and reliable, possessing strong leadership skills that were recognized in both middle school and high school. He is known for being polite and well-mannered, as noted by the mother of teammate Ren Mihashi. Off the field, he is a diligent student who attends cram school and is capable of understanding complex tactical lectures. He has a strong sense of responsibility, honoring commitments to his classmates even when it conflicts with his baseball schedule. However, he is also easily flustered and prone to being teased by his teammates, particularly by Yuuichirou Tajima. Despite his polite demeanor with others, he has a bickering but close relationship with his own mother, who is his biggest supporter, though he hates it when she calls him by his given name, Azusa, in public.

As the captain, Hanai's role is central to the team's function. He is the primary liaison between the players and Coach Momoe, often voicing concerns and taking initiative without waiting for orders. His motivations are deeply rooted in a rediscovered passion for baseball and a strong desire to not disappoint his coach or teammates. A key driving force and internal conflict for him is his rivalry with Tajima, the team's most naturally gifted batter. Hanai possesses a powerful inferiority complex regarding Tajima's superior batting average and all-around skill, a fact he is painfully aware of. Coach Momoe actively cultivates this rivalry to push Hanai to grow, and while criticism from Tajima can deflate him, praise has the opposite effect, boosting his confidence.

Hanai's notable abilities include being a highly skilled batter capable of hitting home runs, a feat that impressed even strong opponents like Haruna from Musashino. He has a good eye for the ball and can follow Coach Momoe's complex batting instructions, such as directing hits to specific field locations. Defensively, he possesses a strong and accurate throwing arm, which proved crucial in securing a victory against Tosei. While he can serve as an emergency pitcher, his control is not refined enough to face powerful lineups, and Coach Momoe notes the team would likely lose if he were to replace Mihashi on the mound. Over the course of the story, Hanai develops greater confidence in his own skills, gradually learning to channel his competitive drive against Tajima as a positive force rather than a crushing weight. His growth is marked by his eventual acceptance of the cleanup hitter position, a role he steps into with determination.
