Description
In the anime Lady Georgie, Abel is one of the two adoptive brothers of the title character, growing up with her on a farm in rural Australia during the 19th century after she is taken in as an orphaned infant by his father. As a member of the Buttman family, Abel shares a close bond with his younger brother Arthur and with Georgie, who is raised believing they are all biological siblings.

From a young age, Abel is characterized as handsome, strong, and impulsive, with a passionate and sometimes aggressive temperament. These personality traits become more pronounced as he enters adolescence, where his central conflict arises: his growing romantic love for Georgie, whom he knows is not his blood-related sister. He is aware of her true origins, a fact that complicates his feelings and distinguishes his internal struggle from that of his brother Arthur, who is initially unaware of the adoption. Abel is driven by a powerful, possessive love for Georgie, and his motivations throughout the story center on his desire to be with her, which puts him in direct conflict with his role as her brother and with societal norms. His inability to handle these conflicting emotions leads him to resolve to leave home and become a sailor, hoping to escape his feelings for her.

Abel serves as a primary romantic interest and a key source of dramatic tension. His role is that of the tormented and devoted lover who refuses to give up on Georgie, even as she falls in love with the English nobleman Lowell J. Grey. His jealousy and passion often manifest in reckless actions. For instance, his anger and despair over Georgie’s relationship with Lowell, compounded by his mother’s revelation of Georgie's status as an exile’s daughter, drive him to drink excessively and momentarily seek comfort in another woman, Jessica, who has feelings for him. His devotion, however, proves unwavering. He follows Georgie to London after she goes to search for Lowell and her birth father, and he becomes embroiled in the dangerous intrigues of the London aristocracy, ultimately being imprisoned after killing a relative of the villainous Duke Dunkelin.

His most significant relationship is, of course, with Georgie, to whom he is fiercely devoted. This dynamic is complicated by their life as siblings, leading to moments of awkward tension, such as his embarrassment when she treats him purely as a brother by taking his clothes to wash, unaware of his true feelings. He also shares a deep but competitive bond with his brother Arthur, as both are in love with the same woman, creating a quiet rivalry between them. His relationship with his mother is strained; she is aware of his feelings for Georgie and, while she may not approve, her own animosity toward Georgie is partly fueled by the disruption her presence has caused in her sons’ lives.

Over the course of the story, Abel undergoes significant development, though his core passion remains a constant. He matures from a boy who acts out in jealousy, even beating up another child, into a young man who is willing to sacrifice his freedom and safety for Georgie and his family. His journey is one of accepting the depth of his own feelings and acting upon them, even when faced with rejection. While he confesses his love to Georgie, she does not reciprocate in the anime, choosing Lowell instead. The anime concludes with Abel, along with Arthur and Georgie, returning to Australia, having survived the ordeals in London. This ending differs substantially from the original manga, where his story concludes tragically with his death after a final confrontation with the Duke. Regarding notable abilities, Abel is portrayed as physically capable and strong, possessing the practical skills of a farmhand and later a sailor, but he does not have any special or superhuman powers.
