Description
Kanade Tachibana is a central figure in the narrative of Angel Beats!, serving as the student council president at the school that exists in the afterlife. She is a petite teenage girl with long, straight silver-white hair and amber eyes. Her most striking physical feature is her consistent lack of facial expression, which, combined with her very quiet and reserved nature, makes her thoughts and feelings difficult to discern. Due to her supernatural powers and her role enforcing order, she is given the nickname Angel by the members of the Afterlife Battlefront, though she herself firmly denies being an actual angel.
Despite her cold and unfeeling exterior, which is often mistaken for hostility, Kanade possesses a deeply kind and selfless personality. Her primary motivation in the afterlife is to ensure that other students who have died with regrets can resolve those feelings and move on. She acts as a guardian of the world's rules so that people can live out a proper youth, the thing most of them were denied in life. Her difficulty with expressing emotion and her tendency to take things literally often lead to misunderstandings, causing her good intentions to be interpreted as aggression. This social awkwardness is also expressed in her personal tastes; she is extremely fond of extremely spicy mapo tofu, a dish she eats frequently without fully understanding why she enjoys it so much.
The story positions Kanade as the primary obstacle for the protagonists, but her role evolves significantly as the truth about her character is revealed. Initially seen as an enemy or a representative of an unjust god, she is eventually understood to be a human just like everyone else, who has been in the afterlife for a very long time. She has watched all of her previous friends disappear after they found peace, leaving her alone to continue her work. Her central relationship is with the protagonist, Yuzuru Otonashi. He is the first person to genuinely try to understand her, and he becomes her closest ally and friend. Otonashi helps bridge the gap between Kanade and the Battlefront, and together they work to help the other members find peace.
This bond is rooted in the most crucial aspect of Kanade’s background. Before her own death, she received a heart transplant from Otonashi, who had died in a train accident. Her profound sense of gratitude towards the unknown donor was her sole, lingering regret. It was this unfulfilled wish to say thank you that brought her to the afterlife. Her entire purpose for being there was to meet the person who had given her a second chance at life, and once she is finally able to express that gratitude to Otonashi, she is able to resolve her regret and disappear, moving on from the world.
To fulfill her duties, Kanade has developed a suite of powerful defensive and offensive abilities using a software program called Angel Player. She can manifest these skills through voice commands, which are categorized under Guard Skills. Her most iconic ability is Hand Sonic, which generates a glowing blade from her forearm. This blade has several versions, including a high-speed version, a trident-like version, and a large pair of crushing claws. Other abilities include Distortion, which creates a field to deflect projectiles; Delay, which allows for instantaneous high-speed movement; Harmonics, which creates sentient clones of herself; and Overdrive, which vastly enhances her physical strength. Upon Otonashi's suggestion, she also creates a pair of decorative wings that, while not allowing true flight, can be used to slow her descent. These powers, represented visually by floating binary code, demonstrate her ability to manipulate the digital reality of the afterlife world.
