Description
Kanade Tachibana is the female protagonist of the narrative and serves as the student council president at the high school of the afterlife. She is a petite girl with long, straight silver-white hair and amber-colored eyes, typically dressed in a uniform that differs slightly from those worn by other students. The members of the Afterlife Battle Front, also known as the SSS, refer to her by the nickname Angel, though she personally denies this title and insists she is not an angel.
Kanade is defined by her stoic and taciturn nature. She very rarely shows changes in her expression or speaks at length, making it difficult for others to discern her thoughts or feelings. This outward demeanor leads characters like the SSS leader Yuri Nakamura to describe her as cold and emotionless. However, this perceived coldness is a misunderstanding. In truth, Kanade possesses a gentle and deeply dedicated personality, but she is also clumsy and socially inept, which prevents her from effectively communicating her true intentions. Her awkwardness is exemplified by her love for extremely spicy mapo tofu, a dish she genuinely enjoys without realizing that others find it unbearably painful to eat.
Kanade's primary motivation is the very reason she finds herself in this afterlife. Having received a heart transplant from a young man named Yuzuru Otonashi before he died, Kanade lived her extended life with a deep, unfulfilled desire to thank her donor. This singular regret brought her to this world. Her role as student council president places her in direct opposition to the SSS, who believe she is an agent of God. In reality, her goal is to help the wayward souls of the SSS, who are filled with regrets from their tragic lives, to find peace and pass on to their next existence. Because she is too clumsy to explain this mission, her efforts often manifest as violent confrontations with the very people she is trying to save.
Her most significant relationship is with Yuzuru Otonashi. When Otonashi arrives in the afterlife with amnesia, he initially sees Kanade as an enemy. However, as he learns more about her, he becomes her first true ally and friend, recognizing that her isolation stems from watching everyone else disappear. Otonashi helps her reconcile with the SSS, and in turn, Kanade helps him recover his lost memories. Their bond culminates in the revelation that Otonashi was the one who donated the heart that saved her life, making him the person she had been searching for all along to thank. While initially hostile, Kanade also develops a relationship of mutual respect with Yuri, the leader of the SSS, who eventually becomes a friend and refers to her affectionately.
Throughout the story, Kanade undergoes significant development. She begins as a lonely, misunderstood, and isolated figure, seen as an antagonist by the school's main faction. As she interacts more with Otonashi and the others, she slowly opens up, showing brief flashes of humor and even embarrassment. In the final conclusion of her arc, she sheds her stoic mask entirely, revealing a warm and emotionally expressive personality capable of smiling and crying as she finally fulfills her purpose and expresses her gratitude.
To fulfill her duties and protect herself from the SSS's attacks, Kanade possesses a suite of extraordinary abilities known as Guard Skills. These are not divine powers but are created and controlled using a complex software program called Angel Player, which allows her to manipulate the digital nature of the afterlife world. Her signature ability is Hand Sonic, a blade that materializes from her forearm, which has several versions, including a high-speed version, a three-pronged version, a large lotus-like version, and a giant claw-like version. Other notable skills include Distortion, which creates a field that deflects projectiles; Delay, which allows for high-speed movement that leaves afterimages; Harmonics, which creates sentient clones of herself; and Absorb, which is used to recall those clones. She also develops decorative angel wings at Otonashi's suggestion, which, while mostly ornamental, do grant some limited ability to maneuver in the air.
