Description
Kotarou Mochizuki is a main character in Black Blood Brothers. He is the younger brother of Jirou Mochizuki, and together they are the last two remaining vampires of their special bloodline. Kotarou is a young boy with short blonde hair and blue eyes, and he typically wears Victorian-inspired clothing including a white long-sleeved collared shirt, an ascot, and a brown sleeveless jacket with yellow trim. He and his brother both carry goggles around their necks.
Kotarou's background is defined by his connection to his brother and to the events of the Holy War in Hong Kong, during which Jirou fought the Kowloon Children. Kotarou is later revealed to be the reincarnation of Alice Eve, Jirou's former lover who died in that conflict. Before the series begins, Kotarou and Jirou lived at the residence of the Dark Princess of the North, but Jirou decided to leave so that Kotarou could see the world before his powers fully awakened. They travel to the Special Zone, a designated area where humans and vampires coexist.
In terms of personality, Kotarou is bubbly, cheerful, and mischievous. He tends to be naive and sees the good in people, but he can show determination and hold his own when the situation demands it. He is laid-back and sociable, curious about the world around him, and deeply admires his brother. He often tries to act like a human and respects human ways, but he is conscious of the prejudice that exists between the two races.
Kotarou's motivations revolve around experiencing the world, understanding vampire society, and staying by his brother's side. He serves as a bridge between the human and vampire worlds, often helping to mediate understanding. He is drawn into the conflicts that arise in the Special Zone and supports Jirou in protecting those they care about. His very existence and his true nature as Alice's reincarnation are central to the unfolding story.
His relationship with his brother Jirou is the most significant. Jirou is protective of him, while Kotarou looks up to Jirou and follows him faithfully. Kotarou also interacts with Mimiko Katsuragi, who notices how different the two brothers are. Furthermore, his identity as the reincarnation of Alice ties him directly to Jirou's past love and to the emotional core of the narrative. Throughout the series, Kotarou's role deepens from a seemingly ordinary child to a character with a crucial hidden history.
Development-wise, Kotarou begins as a cheerful and somewhat mysterious child, and as the story progresses, hints about his true nature accumulate until the revelation that he is the reincarnation of Alice. This revelation recontextualizes his bond with Jirou and his own place in the world.
Regarding abilities, Kotarou does not exhibit typical vampire powers such as the Hide Hand. Unlike most vampires, he is not harmed by sunlight or holy water. He demonstrates an extremely high pain tolerance, often being thrown into walls or the ground without apparent injury. It is implied that his vampire powers have not yet awakened, and some accounts mention that he carries a potential ability to control bats from his bloodline. His primary strength lies in his resilience and his unique position as the reincarnation of a key figure from the past.
