Description
Dietlinde Eckart is a fictional character who appears as the primary antagonist in the Fullmetal Alchemist theatrical film. She is a German-born woman who holds the powerful position of chairperson or president within the Thule Society, a mysterious occultist organization operating in Germany during the years preceding World War II. Little is known about her past, which contributes to her enigmatic and mysterious nature. She is a figure of high influence and status within this society, which eventually leads her to cross paths with Hohenheim of Light, a man who confesses to having great knowledge of alchemy and to being from another world.

Dietlinde is initially characterized as a level-headed, soft-spoken woman who presents herself as being driven by a desire to use the power of a parallel world, which she and her society refer to as Shamballa, to restore stability to her troubled country. She is highly ambitious and a staunch believer in the existence of this other dimension. However, beneath this calm exterior lies a cruel and indifferent nature. She shows no remorse for her actions, such as nonchalantly shooting people or showing a calm disregard for Hohenheim's suffering when he is used as a literal "chew toy" to pacify the homunculus Envy. As her plan progresses, her true self-serving colors are revealed, exposing a deep-seated paranoia and a willingness to commit mass slaughter to achieve her ends. Her psychological state deteriorates further after she passes through the Gate to the world of Amestris, escalating into a complete mental breakdown and insanity.

Dietlinde's primary motivation is initially framed as a patriotic drive to harness the magical weapons or alchemy of Shamballa to help Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party succeed in their political takeover of Germany. However, her true goal is ultimately revealed to be one of conquest and, more profoundly, fear-driven elimination. After crossing over to the world of Amestris, she becomes determined to completely eradicate all life there. She confesses that she is acting out of a paranoid terror that the people of that world, with their alchemical powers which she cannot fully understand or control, will inevitably attempt to conquer her own world. This racist and xenophobic ideology reflects the thinking of the Nazi party she is associated with. Her ultimate plan is to use her newfound power to massacre the people of Amestris to eliminate what she perceives as a future threat.

In the story, Dietlinde serves as the main antagonist and the driving force behind the Thule Society's efforts to open the Gate to the other world. After capturing Envy and taking Hohenheim as an unwilling advisor, she uses them to perform rituals to open the Gate. Her first attempt, sending a scouting party of armored warriors through the Gate to the city of Liore, fails when they are sent back as corpses. Undeterred, she orchestrates a second, more successful attempt using the rocket technology of Alfons Heiderich and the direct sacrifice of Hohenheim. She leads a fleet of flying rocket ships through the Gate to Amestris, where she undergoes a severe physical mutation and gains the ability to use alchemy at will. Once there, she commands a corrupted army of her soldiers, who have also been mutated by the journey, in an attack on Central City, using a massive airborne battleship. She is ultimately confronted by the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, and after being defeated by them, is sent back through the Gate to her own world.

Her key relationships are primarily transactional and manipulative. She sees Hohenheim of Light as a source of information and power, keeping him kidnapped and in servitude. She uses the homunculus Envy as a living catalyst to open the Gate. She enlists the help of a Romani woman named Noah to read Edward Elric's mind for knowledge on how to reach Shamballa, exploiting her despite the rampant prejudices of the time. While she collaborates with the Nazi Party and figures like Rudolf Hess, her allegiance is ultimately to her own ambitions rather than to their cause. She has no significant positive or emotional bonds with others; every relationship is a tool for her to use and discard.

Dietlinde undergoes a significant and horrific development throughout the film. She begins as a composed and powerful leader but becomes progressively more unhinged as she gets closer to her goal. The pivotal change occurs when she passes through the Gate, where the mysterious black beings from the realm inside the Gate, sometimes called the Gate Children, bond with her and mutate her. This transformation grants her alchemical powers but also shatters her sanity. Upon arriving in Amestris, she is no longer a calculating politician but a megalomaniacal madwoman focused solely on destruction. After her defeat and forced return to her world, her mutation worsens, turning her into a completely unrecognizable, monstrous blob-like creature. In this final state, her mind is completely gone, and she can only desperately demand to be sent back to Shamballa for a second chance, begging and threatening before being shot dead by the parallel version of Maes Hughes.

Dietlinde has several notable abilities. In her own world, she has some minor knowledge of alchemy, which she refers to as "magic," and can perform incantations to activate the Gate. Upon crossing into Amestris, her abilities are dramatically enhanced. Due to her mutation, she gains the full power to use alchemy at will, without the need for a circle. She demonstrates this by levitating a massive aerial battleship constructed of stone and using it as her command vessel. She also shows the power to transmute her arm into a weapon, such as a large blade, to attack her enemies. The black entities from the Gate that cling to her body also grant her a degree of resilience, allowing her to seemingly withstand gunfire before ultimately succumbing to her wounds. Her defining final ability, however, is the horrific physical transformation that turns her into an insane, monstrous entity, a direct result of her unauthorized passage through the Gate.
