Description
Kuuya Amrulineulka is the young empress of Kunnekamun in Utawarerumono. She belongs to the Shakukopolu people, who are distinguished by their rabbitlike features, and she herself is a short girl with green eyes, long braided blonde hair worn up, and lopped white rabbit ears adorned with gold hoop earrings. Her typical attire includes an embroidered white coat over a red dress, complemented by black stockings and metallic shoes. In public she often wears a veil or mask that completely covers her head, a choice rooted in a deepseated insecurity about her gender. Kuuya fears that her court and subjects cannot see her as a credible ruler because she is a woman, and the mask serves as a shield for that vulnerability.

In personality Kuuya is serious and genuinely devoted to her people’s welfare, yet she is also notably naive and inexperienced as a leader. She presents a bombastic front but is weakwilled when pressed to make difficult choices, frequently leaning on others as a crutch for decisionmaking. This combination of high ideals and practical uncertainty leaves her susceptible to manipulation and bad counsel. Her motivations are clear: she wants to do what is best for Kunnekamun and to be recognized as a worthy sovereign, but the pressure of her position gradually erodes her confidence.

Her role in the story begins when her curiosity is piqued by the almost supernatural military feats of Hakuoro, the leader of Tuskur. She arranges secret nighttime meetings with him, during which he initially believes her to be male until she removes her veil. Through these meetings she comes to trust Hakuoro, believing that he shares her ideals, and she turns to him as an ally. However, her reliance on others and her inability to chart a firm course ultimately contribute to a catastrophic outcome. Kuuya pilots a silver AvuKamuu, one of the giant armored war machines of her nation, but she has no real familiarity with combat. Her inexperience with war, combined with her wavering resolve, helps set the stage for a global conflict.

Kuuya’s key relationships center on Hakuoro and her retainer Genjimaru. Hakuoro becomes her confidant and, in her view, a kindred spirit, making her eventual disillusionment all the more devastating. Genjimaru serves as her protector and loyal aide; his death in battle is a pivotal emotional blow. As the story progresses, Kuuya grows increasingly cynical, depressed, and distrustful. The shock of witnessing Genjimaru’s death and the revelation of Hakuoro’s true nonhuman form shatters her psyche. She suffers a complete psychotic break, regressing to the mentality of a young child who recognizes only Hakuoro. In this state she loses her former regality and any capacity for independent action.

Kuuya’s notable abilities are almost entirely political and military in nature rather than personal combat skill. Beyond her position as empress, her most significant asset is mastery of the silver AvuKamuu, which she can operate despite her lack of battle experience. Her true strength lies in her earnest desire to serve her people, though that aspiration is tragically undermined by her profound insecurity and the immense burdens of rule.
