Description
Lancer is the Lancer-class Servant summoned for the fifth Holy Grail War in the visual novel Fate/stay night and its adaptation Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. His true identity is Cú Chulainn, the legendary hero of Irish mythology, often called the hound of Ulster or the son of light. He is the son of the mortal woman Deichtine and the god Lugh, granting him great divinity and innate supernatural talent.
Lancer was originally summoned by Bazett Fraga McRemitz, a mage sent by the Mage's Association. However, before the war could begin, Kirei Kotomine ambushed Bazett, stole her Command Spells, and claimed Lancer as his own Servant. Lancer holds deep contempt for Kirei’s treachery and lack of honor, but remains bound by the Command Spells to obey him.
In terms of personality, Lancer is carefree, playful, and enjoys socializing, often teasing or flirting with women such as Rin Tohsaka. He has a strong sense of professionalism and loyalty: once he accepts a master, he will carry out his duties faithfully unless given a command that violates his principles. He is a fierce and honorable warrior who loves to test his strength against worthy opponents. In battle, he becomes hot-blooded and intense, but he maintains a code of honor and dislikes underhanded tactics or betrayal. He holds no wish for the Holy Grail; his primary motivation is simply to fight the strongest enemies he can with all his might.
In Unlimited Blade Works, Lancer initially appears as an enemy, impaling Shirou Emiya to force Rin to reveal her Command Spells early. After Caster seizes control of the church, Kotomine orders Lancer to fake his death. Later, Lancer is instructed to cooperate with Shirou and Rin to stop Caster. He agrees and engages Archer in a fierce battle to occupy him so that Rin and Shirou can infiltrate the temple. During this fight, Lancer displays his incredible speed and rune-enhanced attacks, forcing Archer onto the defensive. He also senses Archer’s true motivations and stops fighting, allowing the situation to unfold naturally.
Lancer later goes alone to save Rin after she is captured by Shinji Matou. When Kotomine orders him to kill her, Lancer refuses out of respect for Rin’s resolve and honor. Kotomine uses a Command Spell to force him to kill himself. Lancer stabs his own heart with Gae Bolg, but his Battle Continuation skill allows him to survive long enough to kill Kotomine and drive off Shinji, freeing Rin. He then uses a rune to set the church ablaze and disappears, making a final sacrifice to ensure Rin’s safety.
Key relationships include his deep disdain for Kirei Kotomine, whom he sees as a dishonorable master. He forms a begrudging alliance with Archer, recognizing his skill, and develops a genuine respect for Rin Tohsaka, admiring her strength and willpower. He also works alongside Shirou and Saber temporarily, treating them as allies of convenience. Lancer’s original master, Bazett, is someone he remains loyal to in spirit, and he resents Kirei for her murder.
Lancer’s true development in Unlimited Blade Works lies in his rebellion against an unworthy master. Despite being bound by Command Spells, he chooses to betray Kirei and sacrifice himself rather than harm someone he respects. This act underscores his strong personal code and his refusal to be a mere tool.
Notable abilities include his incredible agility, which makes him one of the fastest Servants in the war. He possesses the skill Battle Continuation, allowing him to survive lethal wounds and continue fighting until he fulfills his goal. His Magic Resistance is moderate, but his speed makes him difficult to hit with spells. He is also proficient in ancient runic magic, using it for concealment, tracking, combat enhancement, and setting fires. His Noble Phantasm is Gae Bolg, the barbed spear that can reverse causality: by thrusting it, he creates the result that the spear has already pierced the heart, making it a near-instant kill that is almost impossible to evade unless the target has exceptional luck or defense. He can also throw the spear as a devastating area-of-effect attack that explodes on impact. Despite his strength, his overall power is somewhat diminished because his legend is not widely known in Japan, meaning he cannot access his full potential or additional Noble Phantasms that he would have on his home soil.
