Description
Gyokumen Koushu is a central antagonist in the storyline, serving as the primary instigator behind the Minus Wave that plagues Shangri-La. She is a demon of considerable age, maintaining the beautiful and exotic appearance of a young woman, characterized by long lilac hair, red eyes, and a distinctive mole beneath her right eye. Her true age is concealed by her youthful looks, and she carries her demonic birthmark on her stomach. Her name translates to "jade-faced" or "jewel-faced princess," and she is also known as Princess Gyokumen.
Proclaiming herself as the mistress to the demon lord Gyumaoh, her single-minded ambition is to revive him so she can become his legal wife. This desire is the engine for all her actions, and she is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to achieve it. To this end, she broke the five-hundred-year-old seal of Houtou Castle, freeing most of its occupants but leaving Gyumaoh's legal wife, Rasetsunyo, in a sealed, petrified state. She stores Gyumaoh's body in a special incubation chamber and seeks to obtain the Heaven and Earth Scripture, a collection of five sutras, to complete the revival process.
Underneath her elegant exterior, Gyokumen is highly manipulative, vain, cold-hearted, and cunning. She considers only herself and her lover to be of any value, viewing all others, including her own family, as tools or obstacles to be discarded. She is ruthless and sarcastic, often displaying a possessive and jealous nature, particularly concerning Gyumaoh. Her personality is also marked by immense pride in her own schemes and a tendency to mock those who fail her.
Her role in the narrative is to be the shadowy mastermind whose actions set the plot in motion. Working with the twisted bioengineer Dr. Ni Jianyi, she deploys a forbidden mixture of demon magic and human science. Together, they release the Minus Wave across Shangri-La, a force that brainwashes the demon population and drives them berserk, creating chaos that serves to further her goal of obtaining the sutras. She uses this crisis to manipulate others into doing her bidding.
Gyokumen's key relationships are defined by utility and contempt. Her relationship with her daughter, Lirin, is devoid of genuine maternal affection. She neglects Lirin, leaving her in the care of others, and sees the girl merely as a potential tool or sacrifice for her plans. Lirin herself is aware of and expresses hatred toward this treatment. Her relationship with her step-son, Kougaiji, is similarly transactional and cruel. She despises him because he reminds her of his mother, Rasetsunyo. She constantly taunts him for his failures to defeat the Sanzo party and only gains his compliance by promising to revive his sealed mother, a promise she may have no intention of keeping. She is also implied to be in a sexual relationship with her ally, Dr. Ni Jianyi, further demonstrating her capacity to use any relationship for personal gain.
In terms of development, the character remains remarkably static in her driving ambition and ruthless nature, but different versions of the story provide nuance to her impact on others. In the anime, she is portrayed as unequivocally callous, while the manga suggests a more complex dynamic, such as Lirin still yearning for her mother's affection despite being neglected. This confirms that Gyokumen is aware of and exploits the emotional vulnerabilities of those around her to maintain control.
Gyokumen possesses several notable abilities that make her a formidable threat. Her primary power is her high intelligence and strategic cunning, allowing her to orchestrate continent-wide crises. She is directly responsible for unleashing the Minus Wave, a potent weapon of mass manipulation. She also has access to a range of experimental inventions developed by Dr. Ni Jianyi, which blend demonic magic with human scientific principles. These tools are used to track the sutras and directly attack her enemies. While she is not often seen in direct combat, her control over these resources and her ruthless manipulation of others establish her as a powerful antagonist who prefers to work from the shadows, using pawns to achieve her ultimate goal of reviving her lover.
