Description
Leina Ashta is the younger sister of Judau Ashta in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. She grows up with her brother in the Shangri-La colony on Side 1, largely on their own, as their father left the colony with an unspecified return date and their mother worked elsewhere to send money back. Despite being the younger sibling, Leina is the more responsible and level-headed of the two. She attends school while Judau works as a junk dealer, and she criticizes his habit of skipping classes to salvage scrap. When Judau attempts to steal mobile suits from the visiting Argama to sell them, Leina is disgusted by his actions. She later conspires with Bright Noa to recruit her brother into the Anti-Earth Union Group, believing that a stable military job would improve their standard of living and give Judau a more productive path.
Once aboard the Argama, Leina performs chores alongside the other young children on the ship, Shinta and Qum. She continues to act as a voice of conscience, supporting Bright’s disciplinary measures regarding her brother and his comrades. Leina’s life takes a dramatic turn when she insists on joining Roux Louka to pursue Judau during a supply mission. In space they encounter Glemy Toto, and during a battle Leina is ejected from her craft. Glemy rescues her, mistaking her for Roux, and takes her captive. Under Glemy’s care, he attempts to transform her from what he calls an “uncultured colonial girl” into a refined lady suitable for the Zeon court, teaching her piano, table manners, and providing dresses. Leina resists this reeducation, repeatedly trying to escape, including using improper etiquette as a distraction during a dinner.
Her captivity becomes a central plot thread, with Glemy using her as a hostage against Judau. Leina is moved between Neo Zeon vessels and locations, at one point tied to a mobile suit as a hostage. She encounters Elpeo Ple on Axis and witnesses Ple’s energetic behavior. During a Neo Zeon declaration in Dakar orchestrated by Haman Karn, Leina begins to demonstrate emerging Newtype abilities. She senses that every applauding Earth Federation official is lying, motivated only by the desire to secure positions in a future Neo Zeon government. When Haman aims a gun at Judau, Leina throws herself in front of him and is grazed by a bullet. Despite her wound, she delivers a stirring speech that shames the Federation officials, and her charisma convinces even Neo Zeon guards to let her and Judau leave under the pretense of Glemy’s orders.

Leina becomes suspicious of Ple’s intentions, believing Ple wants to take her place in Judau’s affections, leading to a brief physical clash. Judau intervenes and convinces Ple that the three of them can become a family. As Leina’s condition worsens with a fever, Ple tries to care for her. Sayla Mass arrives and secretly takes Leina away to safety, leading Judau to believe his sister has perished. Leina recovers under Sayla’s care and is shown briefly in a wheelchair as the Argama crew prepares to launch into space. At the end of the First Neo Zeon War, she reappears with Sayla as Judau prepares to depart for Jupiter, and the siblings are tearfully reunited. Following the war, Leina works as a private secretary under Sayla Mass.
