Description
Byakuya is the ninth and final incarnation created by the malevolent half-demon Naraku, making his appearance in the final arc of the story. As the last of these detachments, his creation occurred after the deaths of previous incarnations like Kagura and Hakudōshi, and his primary function was not direct combat but observation, espionage, and strategic interference. He often refers to himself as an ephemeral being destined to perish with his master, a fate he accepts without struggle or regret.

In terms of personality, Byakuya stands apart from many of Naraku’s other creations due to his calm, polite, and almost affable demeanor. He conducts himself with a degree of civility, even introducing himself to his enemies and expecting the same courtesy in return, showing visible annoyance when attacked without proper introduction. Despite his loyalty to Naraku, he is highly logical and observant, demonstrating a clear sense of self-preservation. He is wary of powerful opponents like Sesshōmaru and is quick to flee when a battle turns against him. He also displays moments of surprising detachment and even a hint of sympathy, such as when he pities the death of his sister-incarnation Kanna, noting Naraku’s cruelty. He will occasionally voice his opinions or criticisms, but ultimately follows orders without rebellion, distinguishing him from many of his predecessors who sought to betray Naraku.

Byakuya’s role in the narrative is largely that of a spy and messenger for Naraku. He is often dispatched to observe the growth of Naraku’s enemies, specifically Inuyasha and the powerful entity Mōryōmaru, and report his findings. He runs interference to prevent Sesshōmaru and Inuyasha’s group from interfering with Naraku’s plans, such as when he creates barriers or summons legions of demons to delay them. His most significant task involves the evil will of the Shikon Jewel known as Magatsuhi; Byakuya assists this entity in its attempts to defile Kohaku’s jewel shard. He is also instrumental in Naraku’s final schemes, specifically tasked with capturing the power of Inuyasha’s Meidō Zangetsuha, the attack that opens a path to the underworld.

Regarding his key relationships, Byakuya is completely subservient to his master, Naraku, acting as a loyal tool without the inner conflict that plagued incarnations like Kagura. He interacts with several other incarnations, most notably Kanna, whom he observes with detached curiosity, correctly noting her lack of emotion while still being unsettled by Naraku’s willingness to sacrifice her. He also works alongside Magatsuhi, the spirit from the Shikon Jewel, using a piece of that demon’s flesh to create illusions to trick Sesshōmaru. For the main cast, he serves primarily as an elusive nuisance, avoiding direct confrontation with Inuyasha’s group while strategically hindering their progress.

Byakuya does not experience significant emotional development in the traditional sense, as he is fully aware of his transient nature from the start. He accepts his role as a disposable incarnation designed to serve a specific purpose and then cease to exist. His development is more functional; as the story progresses, he moves from passive observation to direct action in the final battle, executing the key mission of stealing the Meidō Zangetsuha’s power. His final act reveals that he was not driven by hope or fear, but by a cold commitment to fulfilling his designated function.

Byakuya possesses a variety of notable abilities that make him an effective operative. His most prominent power is the creation of incredibly realistic illusions, which he uses to create distractions, hide his movements, and mislead his enemies. He has the unique ability to detach his left eye, which grows wings and flies away, allowing Naraku to spy on distant locations remotely. For transportation, he rides a large origami paper crane, similar to how Kagura used her feather.

He carries a magical gourd that serves several purposes, including producing poisonous snakes to paralyze victims like Kohaku and splashing water to create a dimensional barrier that transports targets to another space. He also wields a distinctive bladeless sword. While initially seeming worthless, this sword has the crucial ability to absorb demonic energy. In the final battle, Byakuya successfully uses it to sample the energy of Inuyasha’s Meidō Zangetsuha. Later, he uses the sword to slash Kagome, planting a delayed version of the attack that would activate only after Naraku’s death, demonstrating his strategic foresight. He can also erect barriers, summon demonic vines, and teleport.
