Description
Rangiku Matsumoto is the lieutenant of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13, serving directly under Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya. In Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody, she appears as a supporting character within the Soul Reaper forces who respond to a supernatural disturbance in the living world. When unexplained deaths occur in Karakura Town and strange wandering spirits known as Blanks begin appearing, Rangiku accompanies her captain to investigate the reishi anomalies and joins the larger confrontation that follows, providing combat support against the mysterious entities tied to the Valley of Screams.
Rangiku is a tall woman with long, wavy strawberry-blonde hair, blue eyes, and a small beauty mark below the right side of her mouth. She is known for her curvaceous figure and wears the standard Soul Reaper uniform loosely, often with a pink scarf draped over her shoulders and a necklace around her neck. Her lieutenant armband is worn on her sash rather than on her arm, a small detail that reflects her casual approach to regulations. Her background begins in the Rukongai district of Soul Society, where she grew up alone until she was found and befriended by a boy named Gin Ichimaru. Because she did not know the date of her birth, Gin later told her that her birthday should be set to the day they met, the day she was no longer alone. She also met a young Tōshirō Hitsugaya in the Rukongai, and after recognizing the danger posed by his immense and uncontrolled spiritual power, she encouraged him to enter the Shinigami academy. She has held her position as lieutenant for longer than Hitsugaya has served as captain.
Her personality is easy-going, free-spirited, and playful. She loves drinking sake, dislikes paperwork, and frequently teases her serious and short-tempered captain, who often grows frustrated with her laziness. Despite this relaxed exterior, she is capable of becoming completely serious when lives are at stake, and she is deeply loyal to her captain, her division, and her allies. She is sensitive to the feelings of those around her and shows a somewhat maternal side toward younger characters such as Momo Hinamori and Orihime Inoue. Her primary motivations are loyalty to the Soul Society and the protection of others, and she does not hesitate to put herself in danger when necessary. Her relationship with Hitsugaya is one of the most defining aspects of her character; the two clash constantly over her lackadaisical habits, yet they share genuine mutual trust and respect, and she is almost always at his side during official duties and battles. Her history with Gin Ichimaru adds emotional depth to her character, as Gin later became a captain who betrayed the Soul Society, and her reflections on their past together reveal a more vulnerable and mournful side beneath her cheerful demeanor.
In combat, Rangiku wields a zanpakutō called Haineko, which means Ash Cat. Its release command is Growl, Haineko, and when activated it transforms from a standard blade into a cloud of ash-like particles that she can control at will. This ash can cut like a sword and is highly versatile, able to slip through gaps, travel around obstacles, form whirlwinds, and sweep across an area to strike enemies from unexpected angles. In Memories of Nobody, she employs this ability during the fighting that breaks out in the human world, using the drifting ash to engage and shred the Blank spirits as they swarm. Her fighting style relies on agility, misdirection, and the ability to attack at a distance, making her a deceptive and dangerous opponent despite her casual demeanor. Within the film, her role is not central to the emotional storyline, which focuses on Ichigo Kurosaki and the mysterious girl Senna, but she is an integral part of the Soul Society side of the plot, contributing both moments of levity and reliable combat support during the crisis.
