Description
Kotone Kirishima is the older twin daughter of Keizou Kirishima, a Buddhist monk, and lives with her sister Akari at the family temple, where both serve as shrine maidens. From a young age she has possessed a strong supernatural sensitivity, allowing her to perceive spirits, curses, and other paranormal phenomena that ordinary people cannot detect. Because of this ability, she and Akari are the only characters in the story who know that the protagonist Junpei Kōsaka has been cursed and can now understand cats.

On the surface Kotone presents a gentle, sweet, and demure demeanor that masks a far more complicated inner nature. She is deeply attracted to Junpei precisely because his life is filled with misfortune, and she takes quiet delight in observing his struggles. Her feelings for him carry a possessive, obsessive quality; she stalks him and reacts with sharp jealousy whenever another girl gets too close. Kotone is also thoroughly entertained by his cat-related curse, treating it as a fascinating plaything rather than a burden. She uses her spiritual knowledge and her awareness of his secret to tease, mislead, or assist him depending on her mood, adding a playful but chaotic element to the comedic and romantic situations that arise around Junpei.

Within the story, Kotone functions as both an ally and an unpredictable force. She and Akari help Junpei navigate his curse, but Kotone’s antics often complicate his relationships and heighten the harem-like tensions among the girls who surround him. Despite her mischievous and sometimes sadistic tendencies, she remains genuinely devoted to her sister Akari, and the twins share a close bond while jointly managing their temple duties. Kotone’s role highlights the blend of supernatural slice-of-life and romantic comedy that defines the series, as her outward sweetness constantly gives way to calculating amusement, obsessive affection, and a delight in the chaos that follows Junpei wherever he goes.
