Description
Mystogan is a former S-Class Mage of the Fairy Tail guild and the current King of Edolas. His true name is Jellal, and he is the Edolas counterpart of Jellal Fernandes from Earth Land. He first appeared in the series as a highly mysterious figure who always covered the lower half of his face with a mask and rarely showed himself around the guild, often putting his fellow members to sleep with his magic whenever he visited to keep his identity hidden.

His background originates in the parallel world of Edolas, where he was born as the prince and son of King Faust. As a child, he was seriously injured and saved by the Exceed Panther Lily, who was subsequently exiled for helping a human. This event forged a deep bond between them. Growing up, Mystogan became increasingly troubled by his father's use of the Anima, a spell that drained magic power from Earth Land to sustain Edolas's limited resources and fuel the king's conquests. Determined to stop this, he left Edolas through an Anima portal in the year X777 and arrived in Earth Land, adopting the alias Mystogan. He spent time traveling and closing Anima portals. During his journey, he encountered a young Wendy Marvell, the Sky Dragon Slayer, after her dragon Grandeeney had abandoned her. He traveled with her for about a month before placing her in the care of Roubaul, believing it would be safer for her than continuing with him. He eventually joined the Fairy Tail guild, becoming an S-Class Mage in X782.

Personality-wise, Mystogan is reclusive, reserved, and introverted. He avoids social interactions and scrutiny, going so far as to magically incapacitate his guildmates to prevent them from seeing his face. Despite this aloof exterior, he is deeply loyal to Fairy Tail and its members. He demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility, often putting others' needs above his own. Wendy describes him as a very kind person, and Makarov notes that he does not talk much. His reclusive nature stems primarily from his desire to spare Erza Scarlet the pain of seeing a face identical to the Jellal who had traumatized her in the past. He also carries a quiet wisdom and maturity, and he holds a firm commitment to protecting those he cares about, even if it means working from the shadows.

His motivations are twofold: to stop Edolas from stealing magic from Earth Land by closing Anima portals, and to safeguard his guild and friends. Ultimately, he seeks to rectify the wrongs of his father's reign and find a way for Edolas to survive without exploiting other worlds. He also wishes to see his friend Panther Lily achieve happiness.

In the story, Mystogan plays a crucial role during several arcs. During the war against Phantom Lord, he secretly single-handedly defeats all of that guild's subdivisions and restores Makarov's drained magic power, all without his guildmates realizing. In the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, he confronts Laxus Dreyar in an attempt to stop his takeover of the guild. During this fight, Laxus burns off his mask, revealing his resemblance to Jellal and shocking Erza. Mystogan teleports away without explanation, telling her that he is not the Jellal she knew. Later, during the Edolas arc, his true identity is fully uncovered. He returns to Edolas and, with the help of the Earth Land Fairy Tail members, overthrows his father's regime. He reverses the Anima, restoring Edolas's own magic power and stopping the drain on Earth Land. Afterward, he remains in Edolas as its rightful king, leading its people forward without reliance on stolen magic.

His key relationships include his deep friendship with Panther Lily, who saved him as a child and later becomes a loyal companion. He shares a complicated dynamic with Laxus, who knows his identity and provokes him. Makarov serves as a mentor figure, being one of the few able to resist his sleep magic. His relationship with Erza is strained by his resemblance to her former tormentor, but he acts to protect her from that pain. He also has a brief but meaningful connection with Wendy, having cared for her when she was young.

Development wise, Mystogan evolves from a shadowy, self-isolating figure into a decisive leader who openly accepts his role as king and protector of Edolas. He learns to confront his past and choose openness for the sake of those he loves. His farewell to Fairy Tail is marked by a final clash with Natsu, which serves as both a goodbye and a celebration of his time with the guild.

Notable abilities include his extremely powerful sleep magic, which can put entire guild halls, including powerful mages like Erza and Mirajane, to sleep. He carries multiple magic staves that allow him to cast various spells. He can use illusion magic, such as the Tower of Babel, to disorient enemies. He is also capable of teleportation and can transform his body into mist or wind to evade attacks. His more advanced techniques include the Five-Layered Magic Circle: Sacred Song, a powerful beam attack, and the Septuple Magic Circle: Void, which can trap and erase opponents. Despite his power, he often prefers stealth and avoidance over direct confrontation.
