Description
Laxus Dreyar is an S-Class Mage of the Fairy Tail guild, born into the Dreyar family as the grandson of Guild Master Makarov Dreyar and the son of Ivan Dreyar, who was later excommunicated and became the master of the dark guild Raven Tail. As a child, Laxus was kind and deeply attached to his grandfather and the guild, but his father’s expulsion and the growing feeling that his reputation came solely from being Makarov’s grandson caused him to become bitter and obsessed with proving his own strength. He underwent a procedure in which a Lightning Dragon Lacrima was implanted into his body by his father, making him a second-generation Dragon Slayer who wields Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic.
His early personality was arrogant, overbearing, and dismissive of weaker guildmates. He believed himself to be the strongest member of Fairy Tail and openly stated that once he became master, he would eliminate all weak members to create the most powerful guild in the kingdom. He showed little concern for others, once demanding inappropriate favors in exchange for help during the guild’s conflict with Phantom Lord, and even lashed out at his own trusted team, the Thunder God Tribe, when contradicted. His primary motivation was to seize control of Fairy Tail and reshape it in his own image, driven by a deep need for recognition and a desire to surpass his grandfather.
Laxus served as the main antagonist of the Fighting Festival arc, where he staged a coup against Makarov by trapping many guild members and threatening the town of Magnolia with his Thunder Palace spell. During his battle with Natsu Dragneel and Gajeel Redfox, he entered a berserker state and showed willingness to destroy everything, including his own guild. However, despite his hostility, his Fairy Law spell—a light-based judgment magic—failed to target any of his guildmates or townspeople, revealing that he subconsciously cared for them. After his defeat, he was excommunicated from Fairy Tail but later shed tears during the Fantasia parade when Makarov silently assured him he would always be watched over.
Following his redemption, Laxus underwent significant character development. He became more light-hearted, serene, and willing to take responsibility for his past actions, even offering to shoulder all blame so the Thunder God Tribe could remain in the guild. He temporarily joined Blue Pegasus after Fairy Tail’s disbandment but returned when the guild reformed. Throughout later arcs, he fought alongside his comrades, showing newfound loyalty and protectiveness. He participated in the S-Class exam on Tenrou Island, assisted in the battle against Hades, and took part in the Grand Magic Games, where he defeated Jura Neekis in a close match. During the Alvarez Empire war, he faced the Spriggan 12 member Wahl Icht and unlocked the Red Lightning Dragon King Mode, a powerful form that further enhanced his abilities. In the sequel series Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, he later absorbed the Lightning Dragon King’s power and attained Lightning Dragon King Mode.
Key relationships in his life include his grandfather Makarov, whose will he eventually inherited; his father Ivan, whom he ultimately rejected and fought; and the Thunder God Tribe—Freed Justine, Bixlow, and Evergreen—who remained loyal to him even during his exile. He also developed mutual respect with Natsu, Gajeel, and other guild members after his redemption. Laxus suffers from motion sickness, a common trait among Dragon Slayers, though he is deeply ashamed of it.
His notable abilities center on Lightning Magic and Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic, allowing him to generate, manipulate, and transform into lightning. He can perform Dragon Slayer techniques such as Lightning Dragon’s Roar, Lightning Dragon’s Crushing Fist, and Lightning Dragon’s Jaw. He developed the large-area spell Thunder Palace, which suspends lacrima orbs loaded with lightning over a target area. He also mastered Fairy Law, one of the guild’s three great magics. Later enhancements include the Red Lightning Dragon King Mode, which grants crimson lightning and increased speed and power, and the Lightning Dragon King Mode, a pinnacle form achieved after absorbing external Dragon Slayer magic. Despite his immense magical power and physical strength, his growth is defined by his shift from a self-centered antagonist to a protective and reliable ally.
