Description
Kiyokazu Fujimoto is a central character from the anime and manga series Kobato. He is a young man who works part-time at the Yomogi Nursery School while also studying to become a lawyer. His commitment to his studies is driven by a practical goal, though his work at the nursery is a more immediate part of his daily life. Fujimoto is also the neighbor of the protagonist, a girl named Kobato, living in the same apartment complex.

Fujimoto’s background is defined by a painful childhood. He is an orphan who was abandoned by his birth mother on Christmas Day, an event that left him with a lasting dislike for both snow and the holiday season. He was later taken in and raised by the father of Sayaka Okiura, the director of the Yomogi Nursery School. This act of kindness created a deep sense of debt and loyalty within Fujimoto, shaping many of his future decisions. He grew up at the nursery and feels a strong responsibility to protect it and the people associated with it.

Personality-wise, Fujimoto initially comes across as blunt, sarcastic, and even cold. He has a defensive and prickly exterior, often using harsh words or teasing to keep people at a distance. This behavior is a direct result of his past trauma and a general distrust of others, born from feeling unwanted as a child. However, this cold demeanor is a mask for a fundamentally kind and caring heart. He is fiercely protective of those he considers his loved ones and will go to great lengths to help them, even if he complains about it the entire time. His colleagues and those who know him well understand that his grumpiness is not genuine malice but rather a clumsy way of showing concern.

Fujimoto's primary motivation is to support Sayaka Okiura and the Yomogi Nursery School. After Sayaka's father passed away, he left behind significant debts. To help keep the nursery afloat, Fujimoto put his university education on hold and began working an exhausting number of part-time jobs in addition to his duties at the nursery. His determination to become a lawyer is fueled by a desire to gain the skills and financial stability needed to protect the nursery from legal and financial threats, most notably from Kazuto Okiura's yakuza family. His life is driven by a sense of duty to repay the family that gave him a home when he had none.

In the story, Fujimoto serves as a foil and eventual love interest to the protagonist, Kobato. When she first arrives to volunteer at the nursery, he is openly suspicious and hostile towards her, fearing she might be untrustworthy and could potentially hurt Sayaka like others have. He frequently mocks her naivety and clumsiness. However, as the story progresses, he begins to warm up to her. He secretly helps her, subtly shows concern for her well-being, and eventually finds himself developing genuine feelings for her. He is the last person whose wounded heart must be healed for Kobato to fulfill her mission, making him the key to her wish.

Key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Sayaka Okiura is extremely important; he loves her deeply, first as a sister and then with romantic feelings, and his entire adult life has been dedicated to serving her. His friendship with Takashi Domoto, a fellow law student, provides a glimpse into a life he put on hold. Most significantly, his evolving relationship with Kobato is the emotional core of the story, transforming from irritation and distrust to deep affection and a desire to protect her.

Fujimoto undergoes significant character development throughout the series. He starts as a closed-off, bitter young man ruled by his past, but gradually learns to open his heart again thanks to Kobato's unwavering kindness and optimism. He has to confront and move past his one-sided love for Sayaka to recognize his true feelings for Kobato. In the anime conclusion, after Kobato disappears to fulfill her wish, everyone's memories of her are erased, including Fujimoto's. However, the emotional impact of their bond remains, and he eventually recovers his memories. In the manga, he similarly loses his memories of her, only to regain them years later upon meeting her reincarnation.

Fujimoto possesses several notable abilities. His most defining trait is his incredible work ethic and versatility, as he is a full-time part-timer capable of adapting to any job, from delivering pizzas to handing out promotional samples. He also knows how to play the organ and has demonstrated martial arts skills, making him an effective fighter against ordinary humans. These practical skills, combined with his intelligence and determination, define him as a capable and resourceful individual.
