Description
Hiroto Minaka is the eccentric and brilliant founder and chairman of the powerful corporation known as MBI. His background is rooted in a momentous discovery made in 1999, when he and a fellow university student, Sahashi Takami, encountered a massive alien ship that had appeared on a deserted island within Japanese waters. It was within this vessel that they found the 108 Sekirei, bio-engineered beings with extraordinary powers. Minaka used the advanced over-technology from the ship to build MBI into a global super-conglomerate, amassing enormous influence over economics, technology, and even the capital city itself. He named the island Kamikura and claimed it as his private territory, removing it from all maps. When an international military force attempted to intervene, Minaka deployed his newly formed Disciplinary Squad to annihilate them, solidifying his control.
Minaka possesses a tall and slender build, standing at 190 centimeters, and is almost always dressed entirely in white, including a suit, gloves, and a robe. He wears glasses and has tall, spiky white hair, though photographs from his university days show him with black hair and a more flamboyant costume, including a red scarf. His most defining characteristic is his personality, which is considered utterly insane by many, including Takami. While widely acknowledged as a super-genius with a charismatic personality and a remarkable ability to take action, Minaka is driven by a childlike obsession with creating a new "age of the gods" or "world of gods," a grand mythological narrative he wishes to bring to life. He views the Sekirei not as living beings but as tools and pieces on a board, and he has appointed himself the "Game Master" of the Sekirei Plan, a brutal battle royale he designed for his own amusement.
Minaka's motivations are complex, stemming from a desire to witness an epic story unfold, seemingly without concern for the suffering it causes. He often claims that everything he does is to set the stage for this mythology, and he relishes his role as the orchestrator of chaos. In the story, he is the primary antagonist and the driving force behind the entire plot. He oversees the brutal battles between Ashikabi, the humans who can partner with Sekirei, and their Sekirei fighters. He frequently changes the rules of the game to escalate the conflict, such as announcing that Ashikabi without victories will be eliminated, forcing even peaceful participants to fight. He enjoys taunting and manipulating the players, sending them messages about unwinged Sekirei to start conflicts, while also building recreational facilities for them, acting as a gamemaster concerned with his players' experience. He has no tolerance for those who try to escape his game, as shown when he punishes Minato by forcing him into a battle royal for helping another Ashikabi flee the city.
Key relationships heavily define his character. His most significant partnership is with Takami Sahashi, the head researcher of MBI and the mother of his two children, Minato and Yukari Sahashi. Their relationship is complicated; while Minaka genuinely cares for Takami and constantly asks her to marry him legally, she refuses, thinking him insane and keeping him away from their children. For most of the series, Minato is unaware that Minaka is his father, as his mother told him he was dead. Minaka has shown a strange, detached interest in his children, particularly Yukari, but respects Takami's wishes to stay away. He is also responsible for the creation of the Sekirei Plan alongside the researcher Takehito Asama, whom he may have allowed to die or been unable to save. He made a promise to the dying Takehito not to involve the powerful Sekirei Miya in his plan, a word he honored.
Despite his villainous nature, Minaka exhibits minor redeeming qualities. He is genuinely affectionate toward Takami and has expressed a desire to be a family with her and their children. He also shows a twisted sense of honor by keeping his promise to Takehito regarding Miya. In the final stages of the plan, he works to repair the Sekirei ship and fights off invaders, showing a long-term goal beyond simple amusement. His development over the series is minimal, as he remains consistently enigmatic and maniacal until the end. However, his motivations are eventually reframed; it is revealed that the brutal Sekirei Plan was his unorthodox and extreme method to ultimately free the Sekirei from the control of the alien ship's system. In the aftermath, while still alive, he is left unable to see his grand plan's desired ending and sequesters himself on Kamikura Island, his organization suffering from his actions and with his children having no desire to know him.
Minaka is a non-action big bad, possessing no notable physical fighting abilities of his own. Instead, his power and threat level come entirely from his immense intellect, strategic planning, and the vast resources of MBI. He is a master manipulator and a Chessmaster, orchestrating events from behind the scenes to unfold exactly as he desires. He is exceptionally well-versed in numerous fields, including biology, technology, pharmaceutics, and economics. Perhaps his most significant ability is his inherent quality as an Ashikabi, which allowed him to open and interface with the alien ship in the first place, a key factor in his rise to power and his ability to control the Sekirei Plan from its core.
