TV-Series
Description
Isshin Kurosaki is the head of the Kurosaki family and the father of Ichigo, Karin, and Yuzu. He runs a private medical practice, the Kurosaki Clinic, from his home in Karakura Town. While he is a skilled doctor capable of performing a wide range of medical procedures, his true identity is far more complex, as he is also a former captain-rank Soul Reaper.
On the surface, Isshin presents himself as a silly, overly energetic, and fight-loving father who delights in making a fool of himself. He often uses a loud voice, a wide grin, and an exaggerated manner that comically alienates his children, particularly Ichigo, who frequently responds with physical kicks. Isshin seems to especially enjoy provoking and teasing his son, justifying his attacks as a way to make him stronger. In contrast, he treats his twin daughters with more visible gentleness, though with an equally intense and embarrassing affection. He is also known to speak to a large memorial poster of his late wife, Masaki, in the family kitchen when he feels emotional, revealing a sentimental side beneath his boisterous exterior. He is a big fan of the television celebrity Don Kanonji.
Despite this outrageous public persona, Isshin possesses a deeply serious and grim nature that surfaces during critical moments. This duality was most apparent during his confrontation with the Grand Fisher, where he displayed no trace of his usual humor, and in his subsequent conversations with the ally Kisuke Urahara. His goofy behavior is, in many ways, a façade that allows him to watch over his children while concealing his profound understanding of the spiritual world, including knowledge of groups like the Visored and the treachery of Sōsuke Aizen.
Isshin's motivations are rooted in the protection of his family, an objective that defines both his past and present. His wife, Masaki, was killed by a Hollow called Grand Fisher several years before the main storyline. This tragedy is a defining event for him; he was unable to prevent her death, a failure that haunts him deeply. He later avenges her by killing the Arrancar-enhanced Grand Fisher, finally ending the creature that had haunted his family. He is also shown to be a laissez-faire parent regarding Ichigo's dangerous activities, trusting his son's strength while secretly providing protection from behind the scenes. For instance, he reveals he has long been aware of Ichigo's substitute Soul Reaper duties and the mod soul Kon's presence, even giving Ichigo a charm specifically meant to protect Kon during his mission to the Soul Society.
Isshin's role in the story evolves significantly from a comic-relief father to a key figure in the larger conflict. He is a long-time associate of the enigmatic Kisuke Urahara, and their history is deeply intertwined. He shares another complex relationship with Ryūken Ishida, the father of Ichigo's rival Uryū. Like their sons, Isshin and Ryūken have a tense, bickering friendship, but with a deeper layer of mutual respect and a shared history concerning the events that led to Masaki's death. It is eventually revealed that Isshin was once the captain of the 10th Division in the Gotei 13, and his original family name is Shiba, making him a relative of characters like Kaien, Kūkaku, and Ganju Shiba. He gave up his Soul Reaper powers two decades before the story to save Masaki's life, a sacrifice that led to their marriage and the birth of his children. His character arc culminates when his powers are restored, allowing him to directly confront powerful enemies like Sōsuke Aizen alongside his son.
Isshin's notable abilities are those of a high-tier Soul Reaper. He wields a Zanpakutō named Engetsu, which he releases with the command Burn. Like his son, he can perform the Getsuga Tenshō, a technique that concentrates his spiritual energy and releases it in a powerful, crescent-shaped slash. He possesses masterful skill in standard Soul Reaper combat arts, including swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat (Hakuda), and the flash-step technique (Shunpo). He is also proficient in Kidō (demon arts), able to create powerful barriers and defenses. He demonstrates a unique technique called blood-blade flame attack, which allows him to spit blood onto Engetsu to create a massive burst of spiritual pressure-fueled flames. While his Bankai has never been shown, it is implied to place a significant strain on his body, preventing him from using it when he is already injured.
