Description
Fuko Kirisawa is a central character known for her fierce independence, exceptional speed, and mastery of wind-based combat. She is a teenage girl of high school age who presents a tough, tomboyish exterior, a persona that often leads others to overlook her more sensitive and feminine qualities. Despite this, she is not vain, though she becomes genuinely angered when her appearance is insulted. Fuko holds a deep respect for human life and harbors a strong hatred for those who would take it for granted, a trait that defines many of her actions throughout the story.

Her background is rooted in a long-standing childhood rivalry with Recca Hanabishi. For years, she dedicated herself to defeating him, motivated by a childish promise that he would then serve as her personal ninja. This relentless pursuit of victory isolated her from many peers. However, a formative encounter with a frail classmate named Kishi Maya revealed a more compassionate side beneath her tough exterior. Through this friendship, Fuko learned the value of bravery and emotional openness, prompting her to soften her antisocial tendencies. This early history is key to understanding her motivations when the story begins.

Fuko is driven by a powerful sense of pride and a desire to prove her strength on her own terms. Her primary motivation is initially to defeat Recca, not out of malice, but to validate her own abilities. This desire makes her vulnerable when she learns that Recca has freely chosen to serve another girl, Yanagi Sakoshita. Feeling her long-held goal has been rendered meaningless, she is easily manipulated. This leads to a pivotal early event in which she accepts the Fūjin, a gauntlet-like Madōgu that grants control over wind, from the mysterious Kage Hōshi. The Fūjin, however, is implanted with a brainwashing device that corrupts her mind, turning her into a feral fighter obsessed with defeating Recca. After Recca destroys the device and frees her, Fuko retains the Fūjin and becomes a loyal and invaluable ally.

In the story, Fuko serves as a key member of Team Hokage, the group of warriors assembled to compete in the Ura Butō Satsujin tournament and protect Yanagi. Her role is that of a front-line combatant whose agility and wind abilities make her indispensable. Her most significant relationships are with her teammates. Her dynamic with Recca evolves from bitter rivalry to deep, reliable friendship. She shares a notable bond with Domon Ishijima, who is openly and persistently infatuated with her. Fuko typically responds to his declarations of love with physical reprimands, yet she never definitively rejects him and has shown hints of jealousy, suggesting a complex, unresolved dynamic. She also develops a strong friendship with Yanagi, her initial jealousy giving way to mutual respect and care.

Throughout the series, Fuko undergoes notable development. She begins as a prideful girl whose desire to win makes her susceptible to manipulation but grows into a strategic and compassionate team player. Her arc includes overcoming being controlled and learning to trust her comrades. The fight against the doll master, Ganko Morikawa, is a key moment where, after being violently manipulated, she overcomes the enemy with cunning and ultimately shows mercy, embracing Ganko as a new friend. This act demonstrates her growth beyond simple physical strength into a more empathetic and strategic fighter.

Fuko's notable abilities center on her incredible speed, which makes her the fastest member of Team Hokage. Her primary Madōgu is the Fūjin, which she wields on her arm. The Fūjin houses a sentient, fox-like spirit that speaks to her and enables various techniques. These include Kamaitachi, which forms wind into a cutting blade; Kazadama, a condensed ball of solid wind used as a projectile; and Kaze no Tsume, created by combining Fūjin with a stolen Madōgu stone to form long, controllable wind claws. She is also a proficient hand-to-hand combatant and skilled with throwing darts known as Kiri. Later, she receives the Shinryo Shintō, a bladed tonfa that she keeps strapped to her thigh for close-quarters combat. Through these abilities, Fuko proves herself a formidable warrior whose intelligence and agility often allow her to defeat enemies with raw power.
