Description
Erica Hartmann is a witch from Karlsland and a key member of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. At sixteen years old, she stands 154 centimeters tall and has a youthful, boyish appearance with short blonde hair and blue eyes. She holds the rank of Lieutenant and is affectionately nicknamed Frau by her comrades, though her fearsome reputation in battle has earned her the moniker Black Devil. She is the twin older sister of Ursula Hartmann, a scientist and engineer.
Hartmann's background is defined by immense combat experience, which stands in stark contrast to her youthful looks. She is a super ace with a confirmed kill count exceeding two hundred Neuroi, and by the start of the second season, her tally is said to have surpassed three hundred. Her combat record is spotless; she is noted for never having lost a wingman under her command. In battle, she serves as a close-range attacker, employing a hit-and-run tactic. This ability to find a way to protect everyone, even in dire crises, speaks to a calm and genius-level tactical mind. Her inherent magical ability allows her to manipulate the atmosphere and generate powerful air currents. She commonly uses this to enhance her aerial maneuverability, but can also focus it into a devastating offensive barrel roll attack named Sturm, which creates a tornado-like shockwave capable of obliterating enemies in its path. She pilots a Messerscharf Bf109 series Striker unit, famously adorned with a black tulip pattern, and is armed with an MG42 machine gun and an MP40冲锋枪. Her familiar is a dachshund.
In her daily life within the 501st, Hartmann presents a drastically different persona. She is notoriously lazy and slovenly, possessing an almost perpetually sleepy and disinterested demeanor. Her room is legendary for its extreme untidiness, a chaotic state she makes no effort to change. This habit clashes heavily with her long-time comrade and roommate, Gertrud Barkhorn, whose strict discipline and love of order are the complete opposite of Hartmann's nature. Barkhorn is so exasperated by the mess that she erects a physical barrier, referred to as the Siegfried Line, to separate her side of the room from Hartmann's. Despite her lack of energy for chores or socializing, Hartmann is fundamentally cheerful, friendly, and well-liked, often becoming an unspoken center of the group without needing to say much. She is also known for a mischievous, prankish side, once being the culprit behind the "missing pants" incident that caused a stir among the members.
Her key relationships are deeply rooted in her past. She has served alongside Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke and especially Gertrud Barkhorn for a long time, even before the 501st was formed. Her friendship with Barkhorn is particularly central; despite their constant bickering over her laziness and Barkhorn's perpetual scolding, the two share a close, trusting bond forged on the battlefield. Barkhorn herself acknowledges Hartmann as the most expert witch in the unit. Hartmann also shares a good relationship with Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen, with whom she likes to talk, and the two share the rare distinction of never having lost a wingman.
Over the course of the series, Hartmann's character shows development primarily in her willingness to take responsibility for others. While her lazy exterior remains, moments of crisis reveal her deep care for her teammates' safety. In the third season, she demonstrates her resourcefulness and survival skills when she is shot down alone behind enemy lines, managing to evade a Neuroi and repair her damaged striker unit. Her motivation is not for personal glory or promotion, which she shows little interest in, but rather to protect her comrades and end the fight with as little damage to her allies as possible. She is a soldier who is laser-focused and superhumanly effective when the situation demands it, but who sees no reason to expend energy on anything else when the fighting is done.
