TV-Series
Description
Ai Mori is a central character and a classmate of Kōsuke Ueki at Hinokuni Junior High School. Her name literally means "Forest Love," and she is known for her favorite hobby of meddling in other people's affairs. Early in the series, she discovers Ueki's supernatural power to change trash into trees, though she initially jumps to the peculiar conclusion that he must be an alien. Upon learning the truth about the Battle of the Supernatural Powers from the god candidate Kobayashi, she decides to support Ueki to prevent him from losing all his talents and fading away from existence.
In terms of personality, Ai is generally upbeat and friendly when in a relaxed mood. However, she also displays a notably shallow side, initially believing that all power users except for Ueki are dangerous enemies who cannot be trusted. She is strict with Ueki, especially when he appears ready to do something rash, and continuously attempts to be his voice of reason. Her hot-headed personality often emerges when other characters try to harm Ueki, and her outspoken nature frequently annoys him. Despite these quirks, she cares deeply for her friends, particularly Ueki. She often blushes when she sees him, and other characters speculate that she may have genuine romantic feelings for him, though this is never explicitly confirmed within the series. One recurring gag involves her cooking; the food she prepares looks incredibly odd and off-putting, often featuring squirming octopus tentacles, but it actually tastes quite good.
Her role in the story begins as an ordinary person with no special powers of her own, forcing her to rely on intelligence and adaptability to survive. She frequently puts herself in danger to protect Ueki, even willingly shielding him from attacks when he is beaten up badly. During the battle at Dogura Mansion, she demonstrated her quick thinking by tricking an opponent into wearing her cossack hat to defeat him, despite having no abilities. Later in the series, the god candidate Inumaru gave her a power during Ueki's fight with Seiichiro Sano, though she did not intend to become a power user. Her ability allows her to change her opponent into a lover of glasses, but it comes with a very specific and difficult activation condition: the opponent must perform a cutesy burikko pose, raising their right leg backwards while putting both fists close to their chin. Once activated, the opponent becomes so deeply attached to glasses that they will do anything to prevent them from being harmed. Ai typically uses this by threatening to break her own glasses unless the opponent knocks themselves out. Both Li Ho and Hanon have commented that her power might be the strongest of all if not for its ridiculous condition.
Key relationships define much of her character arc. Her bond with Kōsuke Ueki is the most significant; she considers herself his best friend and will not hesitate to sacrifice herself to ensure his safety. She dedicates most of her time to analyzing his stats and keeping him out of trouble. In the final episode of the anime, a relieved Ai leaps toward Ueki to hug him upon realizing he survived his battle against Hanon. Her relationship with Rinko Jerrad starts poorly, as she initially knows Rinko as a member of the Robert's 10, but they become good friends after clarification from Ueki. She even visits Rinko in the hospital and apologizes on Ueki's behalf for her injuries. With Seiichiro Sano, she is initially wary, thinking he is a power user, which proves true. During later battles, she relies on him just as she relies on Ueki for help.
Throughout the series, Ai shows notable development. Although she starts without any powers, she consistently proves resourceful and thinks on her feet to save herself from trouble. During her battle with Memory, she managed to stall long enough to figure out her opponent's ability and eventually activated her own power by chance when Memory briefly assumed a similar posture during preparation movements. Her shallow distrust of all power users gradually softens as she builds friendships with Rinko and Sano. Her dedication to Ueki remains unwavering, and she serves as both his emotional anchor and, on occasion, his protector despite her lack of physical strength.
