Description
Hypnos is one of the divine antagonists in Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas, serving as the god of sleep and a loyal subordinate to Hades, the ruler of the Underworld. He is the twin brother of Thanatos, the god of death, and acts as a key agent in orchestrating the awakening of Hades during the 18th century Holy War. In this era, Hypnos descends to Earth and adopts the guise of a priest at a cathedral located in a forest near the village where the young painter Alone lives.

In terms of appearance, Hypnos possesses long golden hair and golden eyes, which directly contrasts with his brother Thanatos's silver coloring. He typically wears a dark, almost black divine Surplice, and in The Lost Canvas, he has a pentagram star marked on his forehead. While in his priestly disguise, he wears a simple cassock.

Hypnos is characterized by a calm, calculating, and cautious personality, which stands in stark contrast to the impulsive and aggressive nature of his brother Thanatos. Unlike Thanatos, who acts rashly and revels in destruction, Hypnos is a strategic thinker who prefers to measure his actions carefully and avoid unnecessary confrontation. He despises bloodshed and senseless violence, considering them distasteful. This preference for order and strategy defines his approach to conflict, as he would rather achieve his goals through manipulation and disabling his enemies permanently rather than engaging in chaotic killing. Despite his divine arrogance and disdain for humanity as a whole, he is pragmatic enough to not underestimate his opponents, showing a begrudging recognition of human determination.

Hypnos's primary motivation is to serve the will of Hades and ensure the success of the Holy War against Athena. He works tirelessly to prepare the way for his lord's resurrection and the completion of the Lost Canvas, a painting that would allow Hades to erase all life on Earth. He is deeply devoted to this mission, taking a more active and direct role in the 18th century Holy War compared to the original manga timeline. His actions are driven by a desire to fulfill his duties as a divine servant without the chaos that his brother frequently courts.

In the story of The Lost Canvas, Hypnos plays a pivotal role from the very beginning. He is the primary figure responsible for corrupting the pure-hearted painter Alone, who is destined to become the next vessel for Hades's soul. Hypnos approaches Alone and, recognizing his talent and pure heart, manipulates him by discussing art and philosophy. He guides Alone to find the "True Red" color in a dangerous forest and ultimately shows him a magical painting in the cathedral depicting himself as Hades, surrounded by the happy souls of deceased friends. This act convinces Alone that death is the ultimate salvation, allowing him to willingly accept the spirit of Hades and become the new Lord of the Underworld.

Following Hades's initial awakening, Hypnos remains a constant presence, supervising the Specter army alongside Thanatos from a floating palace. When the soul of Alone proves to be too strong and begins to interfere with Hades's control, Hypnos takes steps to suppress it, ensuring Hades can focus on completing the Lost Canvas. He and his brother also create a powerful double barrier to protect the Hades Castle. Later, when the Gold Saints manage to seal Thanatos, Hypnos assumes a more active offensive role. He sends the four Dream Gods, who are his sons or subordinates, to deal with the Saints of Athena. After their defeat, he confronts the survivors personally. He first captures Aries Shion and Yuzuriha and then engages in a fierce battle with the former Pope, Hakurei. During this fight, Hypnos uses his power to overwhelm his opponents, but is ultimately sealed away by Hakurei, who uses an attack fueled by the souls of Saints who fell in the previous Holy War against the twin gods.

Key relationships define Hypnos's actions. His relationship with his twin brother Thanatos is central; he is the calm voice of reason who must often clean up or caution against Thanatos's reckless violence. He views his lord Hades with absolute loyalty and respect, ensuring the god's plan proceeds without interference. In his role as a priest, he manipulates Alone, pretending to be a mentor while actually orchestrating his doom. Hypnos also commands the Dream Gods, using them as elite soldiers to further the Hades army's agenda.

The character of Hypnos in The Lost Canvas shows development primarily in his increased direct involvement. While he begins as a manipulator working from the shadows, the death of his brother and the threat posed by the Saints force him to take to the battlefield himself. His final moments show a god who, despite his immense power, is ultimately challenged and defeated by the accumulated strength and will of humanity, a concept that seems to surprise and impress him before his sealing.

As a deity, Hypnos wields immense divine power, known as the Big Will or Divine Cosmo, which far surpasses that of mortal Saints. His most notable ability as the god of sleep is to induce an eternal slumber in his victims. He manifests this power through a technique called Eternal Drowsiness, which sends the target into a deep, unbreakable sleep. Hypnos prefers this technique as it is a non-violent method of neutralization, though the sleep can last for eternity if he wishes it. In The Lost Canvas, he also demonstrates a unique ability called Encounter Another Field. This technique allows him to bring his opponents' dreams or nightmares into reality, often by creating a dimensional space that manifests their subconscious fears, which he uses to attack or disorient them. He can also fly, create powerful energy attacks, and is shown to be highly proficient in physical combat, capable of casually blocking attacks from Gold Saints.
