Description
Miko Yotsuya is a sixteen-year-old high school student who serves as the protagonist of the story. She stands about 160 centimeters tall and has black hair, which in the anime adaptation shows faded purple tips, as well as yellow eyes. Her usual expression is somber and tired, reflecting the constant strain of her situation, though she often tries to put on a smile in front of others. She lives with her mother and her younger brother Kyousuke, while her father has passed away.
Her life changes abruptly when she gains the ability to see grotesque spirits and monsters that are invisible to most people. This ability is constantly active, meaning she is never free from the sight of terrifying apparitions that often behave in threatening ways. She has no means to exorcise or fight these entities; instead, she adopts a strategy of complete indifference, having learned that if she does not acknowledge a spirit, it will generally leave her alone. This forces her to maintain a stoic and unflinchingly calm facade no matter how frightened she is inside, though her composure often breaks as soon as she feels safe.
Miko is characterized by her resilience and deep desire to preserve a sense of normalcy in her daily life. Her primary motivation is to protect her cheerful and oblivious best friend Hana Yurikawa, whose unusually strong life energy attracts spirits and sometimes burns off weaker ones. Miko's role in the story is that of an ordinary girl forced to navigate a world of supernatural horror while pretending not to see it, and over time she grows from a purely reactive survivor into someone who actively tries to help others affected by spirits. A turning point comes when she realizes the importance of confronting her fears rather than simply avoiding them, which leads to a deeper understanding of her powers and herself.
Key relationships include her best friend Hana, whose lightheartedness provides emotional comfort and contrast to Miko's struggles. Her younger brother Kyousuke is protective of her, though he cannot see spirits and mistakenly believes she might be involved with a troublesome boyfriend. Mitsue Takeda, an elderly fortune teller known as Godmother, gives Miko a pair of Buddhist prayer beads and later acts as a mentor, offering guidance on navigating the spirit world. Yuria Niguredou, a classmate with a limited ability to see weaker spirits, views Miko as a powerful medium and seeks her validation, eventually becoming an ally. Michiru Ichijou is a transfer student who appears normal but is followed by a massive, terrifying entity; she becomes intensely fixated on Miko. Miko also consults the psychic Rom and later interacts with the exorcist Seto, who cannot see spirits but can banish them.
Miko's notable ability is her clairvoyance, which allows her to see all types of spirits with exceptional clarity, including those that remain invisible even to other spiritual mediums. The power cannot be turned off, making it a constant source of anxiety. Her main tactic is to act as though she cannot see the spirits, using her poker face to avoid provoking them. Throughout the story, she develops a more strategic approach, learning the rules of the supernatural world and gradually building the courage to take action when necessary.
