Description
Abe no Masahiro is the thirteen-year-old protagonist of the series, set in the Heian era. He is the grandson of the legendary onmyōji Abe no Seimei, from whom he inherited both a formidable lineage and a heavy burden. Early in his life, Masahiro lost the spiritual sight that allows onmyōji to perceive supernatural beings, a critical loss that leaves him feeling inadequate and often overshadowed by his grandfather’s towering reputation. He becomes deeply agitated when referred to merely as Seimei’s grandson, and this fuels his central motivation: to surpass his grandfather and be recognized as a great onmyōji in his own right.

Determined and earnest, Masahiro possesses a kind and compassionate nature that extends to both humans and youkai. Despite his youth and initial inexperience, he shows courage and a strong sense of responsibility. His character development is marked by a gradual increase in self-confidence as he learns to trust his own abilities. The turning point comes when he encounters a fox-like creature he names Mokkun, who is later revealed to be Touda (Guren), one of the twelve Shinshō (divine shikigami) loyal to Seimei. Through their bond, Masahiro begins to unlock his latent power, and his spiritual sight returns during an early battle, setting him on the path toward mastery.

In the story, Masahiro serves as the main protagonist, tasked with defending the capital from a variety of threats. His role expands from a frustrated apprentice to a capable exorcist who must confront foreign demons, rival onmyōji, and even schemes to open the underworld. Notable abilities include his growing proficiency in onmyōdō, the use of shikigami, and a deep well of spiritual energy. He also forms a promise to protect Princess Akiko of the Fujiwara clan, a commitment that underscores his growing maturity.

Key relationships shape his journey. His grandfather Seimei, while often testing him, serves as both a mentor and a benchmark. His partnership with Guren is central: Guren, initially skeptical of Masahiro, becomes a loyal companion and teacher. Masahiro must also earn the trust of the other Shinshō, who doubt his worthiness as Seimei’s successor. Through his interactions with allies like Fujiwara no Akiko and his confrontations with antagonists such as the demon Kyūki and the vengeful spirit Kazane, Masahiro evolves from a boy living in a shadow into a determined young onmyōji learning to stand on his own.
