Description
Bolt Tanner, known as Jin Himuro in the original Japanese version, is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. He is a former professional Duelist whose career was destroyed by a single, devastating loss. Tanner once worked his way up the ranks of the dueling world to earn a Turbo Duel against the King, Jack Atlas. However, Jack defeated him with such ease that Tanner became a laughingstock. Humiliated and distraught, his life spiraled downward as he fell in with criminals and underground Duelists, which eventually led to his arrest and imprisonment in a facility known as The Facility.

Tanner's personality is defined by a significant transformation. When first introduced, he is rude, aggressive, and mean-spirited, particularly towards those outside his immediate circle of fellow inmates. He holds a great deal of respect for power and dueling skill, which is why he is highly respected within The Facility and has a tradition of dueling every new inmate to judge their worth. After being defeated by Yusei Fudo, who used a borrowed, seemingly weak deck, Tanner undergoes a change. He becomes much friendlier, nicer, and more loyal, developing a deep respect for Yusei. In the English adaptation, his past struggles with alcoholism and other vices are only implied, whereas the original Japanese version is more direct about his fall from grace.

Physically, Tanner is an imposing figure. He has a tall, wide, and muscular build with light brown or tanned skin. He has dark grey, spiky hair, black eyes with thin eyebrows, and several scars on his face. He typically wears casual clothes.

Tanner's primary role in the story is as a close friend and ally to the protagonist, Yusei Fudo. After Yusei defends the honor of an older inmate named Tenzen Yanagi by defeating Tanner in a Duel, Tanner becomes a steadfast companion. He, along with Yanagi, helps Yusei plan an escape from The Facility. Although Tanner is beaten by the corrupt guard Mr. Armstrong for his friendship with Yusei, this only strengthens his resolve. Before Yusei escapes, Tanner gives him his own ace monster card, Giant Ushi Oni, both as a parting gift and as a way to lead Yusei to a contact named Blister who can provide further aid.

Following his release from prison due to his association with Yusei, Tanner continues to support his friend from the sidelines. He is suspicious of the Fortune Cup tournament, believing it to be a trap for Yusei, and watches the matches with concern. During the Dark Signers arc, Tanner proves his loyalty further by arranging a meeting with the psychic duelist Sayer to gain support for Yusei's cause. This plan backfires, and Tanner is captured and locked in a room. He manages to break free and helps rescue Leo and Luna from a collapsing building, later visiting the injured Akiza in the hospital.

Tanner's development is one of regaining lost honor. He starts as a fallen and bitter man, but his interaction with Yusei allows him to rediscover the values of friendship, loyalty, and self-respect. He moves from being a cynic to a proactive supporter, putting himself at risk to help others. His relationship with Yusei is the key catalyst for this change, but he also forms a close bond with the other members of Yusei's group, including Yanagi, Leo, and Luna.

As a Duelist, Tanner favors a straightforward and aggressive strategy. His anime deck is a Beatdown deck focused on his ace monster, Giant Ushi Oni. His typical play involves using the spell card Cost Down to easily summon Ushi Oni, which he then tributes to bring out his powerful Giant Ushi Oni. In the manga adaptation of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Tanner uses a different strategy, employing a Machina deck focused on summoning powerful Machine-type monsters like Machina Cannon. In this version, he enters the D1 Grand Prix tournament but is swiftly eliminated in the first round by Crow Hogan.
