TV-Series
Description
Bastion Misawa, known in Japan as Daichi Misawa, is a student at Duel Academy who resides in the Ra Yellow dormitory. As a first-year student, he entered the academy with the highest score in the entrance examinations and is widely regarded as the best newcomer of his class. He first encountered Jaden Yuki during these exams, where Jaden playfully referred to himself as number one and Bastion as number two, a ranking Bastion eventually accepts after witnessing Jaden defeat a professor.
Bastion is characterized by a highly analytical and mathematical mind. He believes that everything in life can be calculated arithmetically and covers his cards and the walls of his room with endless numeric formulas. His dueling style is the near opposite of Jaden Yuki's; Bastion relies on rational methods, careful calculation, and studying his opponent's weaknesses, while Jaden depends more on instinct and impulse. This dichotomy between order and chaos is occasionally represented by symbols of a tiger for Bastion and a Chinese dragon for Jaden. Despite his logical nature, he experiences internal conflict over irrational feelings, and it is implied that he has romantic feelings for several female monster cards, with his primary crush being White Magician Pikeru. The neglect of his character as the series progresses becomes a running gag.
Bastion's primary motivation is to become the number one duelist at the academy. To achieve this, he sets his sights on defeating Jaden Yuki, whom he acknowledges as the current number one. After defeating Chazz Princeton in a public duel, Bastion is offered a promotion to the elite Obelisk Blue dormitory but declines, having made a promise to himself not to advance until he is the top duelist. His dedication to this goal leads him to develop a special seventh deck, built specifically to counter Jaden's fusion-dependent strategy by sealing his Polymerization cards. Despite this careful preparation, Bastion is still defeated.
His role in the story sees him as both a friend and rival to Jaden Yuki. He is also one of seven skilled duelists chosen to receive a Spirit Key, which is necessary to seal the powerful Sacred Beast cards. During the Shadow Riders arc, Bastion duels Tania, a tiger spirit in human form. He loses this duel and, as a consequence, is stripped of his free will and becomes infatuated with her. He returns to normal only after Jaden defeats Tania and she leaves.
In his second year, feeling slighted at not being recruited, Bastion challenges the leader of the Society of Light to a duel. However, his self-doubt and desire for acceptance are exploited, leading him to intentionally lose to Chazz Princeton and join the organization. His time in the Society of Light is marked by neglect, as he is given no significant tasks. He eventually leaves the Society of his own accord after a conversation with Dr. Albert Zweinstein, which gives him a new perspective on his self-worth. Following this, he becomes the doctor's apprentice, but a quantum mechanics experiment goes wrong and flings him into an alternate dimension. In this new world, he is reunited with Tania, and the two decide to stay together to protect the dimension's inhabitants, which is where his story in the anime concludes.
Bastion is best known for his unique dueling style, which involves carrying six different decks under his jacket, each based on a different element: Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, Light, and Dark. He switches between these decks depending on his opponent. His Earth deck features Magnet Warrior monsters that use the concept of plus and minus charges to control battles, while his Water deck focuses on summoning Water Dragon through chemical processes like the fusion of hydrogen and oxygen. After the Society of Light arc, he abandons his six decks in favor of a single amalgamated deck. In the manga adaptation, Bastion uses a Yokai Deck, which relies on sending monsters to the Graveyard and then reviving them. His role in the manga is significantly larger than in the anime, and he is depicted with a romantic interest in Alexis Rhodes rather than Tania.
