TV-Series
Description
Jesse Andersen, known as Johan Andersen in the original Japanese version, is a transfer student who arrives at Duel Academy during the third year of the series. He is the representative from the prestigious North Academy, having been invited along with other champion duelists from around the world by Chancellor Sheppard. In the English adaptation, he speaks with a Southern American accent, whereas his Japanese counterpart has no accent but is characterized as being of Scandinavian origin.
In terms of appearance, Jesse has distinctive blue hair that juts out in backward and downward directions and green eyes. His usual outfit consists of a blue, waist-length jacket with darker blue outlines, a lavender shirt with frilled cuffs, and black pants held up by a white belt. When possessed by the spirit Yubel, his appearance changes to a darker vest and top, and his eyes shift from green to orange.
Jesse's personality is energetic, kind, thoughtful, and sometimes shy, sharing many similarities with his close friend Jaden Yuki. Both are excitable, love dueling for the fun of it, and possess the rare ability to communicate with Duel Monster spirits. Jesse has possessed this ability since childhood, and his primary spirit partner is Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle, whom he affectionately calls Ruby. He considers all his monsters part of his family, as they themselves selected him as their master. Jesse is also notably directionally challenged, to the point where Ruby often needs to guide him even to find his way back to his dormitory.
Jesse's primary motivation throughout the story is to acquire the most powerful Crystal Beast monster, Rainbow Dragon. While he possesses the other seven Crystal Beasts, Rainbow Dragon has not yet been made into a card by Industrial Illusions. Jesse seeks a Roman lithograph from which the concept of his Crystal Beasts was derived, hoping that Maximillion Pegasus can finally create the Rainbow Dragon card. Beyond this quest, his purpose for dueling is to play for people who believe in their decks and have strong bonds with their cards.
In the story, Jesse serves as one of Jaden Yuki's most important allies and close friends. After being chosen by Professor Viper to duel Jaden in the first exhibition match of the third year, the two quickly bond over their shared connection with Duel Spirits. Following a series of events that draws the Duel Academy into an alternate dimension, Jesse finally receives the Rainbow Dragon card and uses it to save Jaden and the others, but remains trapped in the alternate dimension himself. He later reappears possessed by Yubel, who has removed Jesse's soul from his body and placed it inside Rainbow Dark Dragon. Jaden eventually frees him, and Jesse's friendship with Jaden becomes symbolized by the fusion monster Rainbow Neos, which combines their signature cards.
Key relationships define much of Jesse's development. His bond with Jaden is the most significant, as their friendship serves as a catalyst for major plot events, including Jaden's descent into becoming the Supreme King following Jesse's disappearance. Jesse's relationship with his Crystal Beasts, particularly Ruby Carbuncle, demonstrates his deep respect for Duel Spirits. He also interacts with other characters such as Zane Truesdale, Adrian Gecko, and Marcel Bonaparte throughout the third and fourth seasons.
Throughout the series, Jesse undergoes notable development. Initially introduced as a mysterious but friendly transfer student, he becomes a trusted companion to Jaden and the others. His possession by Yubel represents a significant challenge, as his body is used to duel against his friends. After being freed, he continues to support Jaden, dueling alongside him against Nightshroud and other threats. In the final season, Jesse returns to North Academy but comes back to help Jaden face the Trueman army and eventually Nightshroud himself.
Jesse's most notable ability is his connection to Duel Monster spirits, which allows him to see and communicate with them just as Jaden does. In terms of dueling, he is considered the fifth-best duelist in the world, ranking below Aster Phoenix and the three legendary duelists. He plays a Crystal Beast deck, which features monsters that, when destroyed, can retreat to the Spell and Trap Card Zones as Continuous Spell Cards instead of going to the Graveyard. His ace monster is Rainbow Dragon, which can be summoned when all seven Crystal Beasts are either on the field or in the Graveyard. While possessed by Yubel, he uses Advanced Crystal Beasts, corrupted versions of his regular monsters, and also demonstrates the ability to summon and fuse the Sacred Beasts. In the manga continuity, Jesse has a different deck entirely, using Insect-type monsters and playing a Legendary Planet card called The Tripper Mercury, reflecting an interest in bugs that he shows when first meeting Jaden.
