Description
Ishizu Ishtar is a central character in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and the second series anime. She is the elder sister of Marik Ishtar and comes from a family of Tomb Guardians, a lineage that for generations was tasked with protecting the tomb of the unnamed Pharaoh and preserving the secrets of his power. As part of this sacred duty, her family also safeguarded two of the Millennium Items: the Millennium Rod and the Millennium Tauk, also known as the Millennium Necklace.

Ishizu is a tall, slender young woman with bronzed skin, long black hair, and distinctive blue eyes. Her appearance is often complemented by traditional Egyptian-style jewelry and elegant attire, including a gold tiara and, during her time in the Battle City tournament, a white dress with a veil. She holds the official position of Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities and, for a time, works as a museum curator in Domino City to draw out the key individuals she needs to set her plans in motion.

Personality wise, Ishizu is typically portrayed as calm, composed, and highly mysterious. She carries herself with an air of wisdom and formality, speaking in a measured and deliberate manner. Her stern and serious demeanor, however, belies a deep well of familial love and a heavy burden of responsibility. As a child, she was affectionate and protective of her younger brother Marik, even helping him sneak outside to see the world, an act that went against their family's strict rules. This event had catastrophic consequences, leading to the birth of Marik's dark alter ego, Yami Marik, who murdered their father. Ishizu carries immense guilt over this tragedy and feels a profound sense of responsibility for the monster her brother has become, dedicating herself to saving Marik's soul even if it means sacrificing her own life in the process.

Ishizu's primary motivation throughout the Battle City storyline is to atone for her past and rescue her brother from his evil counterpart, Yami Marik. To achieve this, she masterminds a complex series of events. She gives Seto Kaiba the Egyptian God Card, Obelisk the Tormentor, on the condition that he hosts the Battle City tournament. Her intention is to use the tournament as a lure to draw out the Rare Hunters and her brother, forcing a confrontation that will allow her to exorcise the evil from Marik. She believes strongly in destiny, largely because of her possession of the Millennium Tauk, which allows her to see the future. She uses these visions to guide key players like Yugi Mutou and Seto Kaiba along the path she believes is fated to lead to Marik's salvation.

Beyond her relationship with Marik, Ishizu's key interactions are with Seto Kaiba and Yugi Mutou. She views Kaiba as a crucial piece in her plan, a powerful duelist whose pride and ambition can be harnessed to host the tournament. Their relationship comes to a head in the Battle City quarterfinals, where she duels him. Using the Millennium Tauk, she predicts his every move and believes his loss is inevitable. However, Kaiba defies her predicted future by making an unexpected play, summoning his Blue-Eyes White Dragon instead of the God card she foresaw, and defeats her. This defeat is a major turning point for Ishizu, as it shatters her absolute faith in a fixed destiny and proves that the future can be changed. Following her loss, she passes the Millennium Tauk to Yugi, telling him it no longer responds to her because the future it showed her has been altered. She also has a connection to the Pharaoh's past, as she is revealed to be the reincarnation of Isis, a high priestess who served the Pharaoh in ancient Egypt.

Throughout the story, Ishizu undergoes notable development. She begins as a woman so bound by her visions of the future that she orchestrates events to fit a predetermined outcome. Her defeat at Kaiba's hands teaches her that fate is not absolute and that individuals have the power to forge their own paths. After Yami Marik is finally defeated and her brother is freed, a more joyful and relieved side of her personality emerges, grateful to Yugi and his friends for saving Marik. In the final arc, she, along with Marik and their adoptive brother Odion, fulfills her family's ancient duty by guiding Yugi and his friends to the Pharaoh's tomb, allowing the Pharaoh's spirit to hold a ceremonial final duel and finally pass on to the afterlife.

Ishizu is a formidable duelist in her own right, having qualified as a finalist in the Battle City tournament. Her deck is themed around "Past Pains" and primarily features Fairy-type monsters with ancient Egyptian motifs, including cards like Keldo, Mudora, and Kelbek. Her most notable ability, however, is granted by the Millennium Tauk. This item allows her to see into the past and future, and she can even project these visions for others to witness. In a duel, this power effectively lets her see her opponent's strategy before they execute it, making her a nearly unstoppable opponent until the intervention of another Millennium Item or an act of sheer willpower changes the course of events.
