Description
Masaru Aoki is a lightweight veteran professional boxer and a core member of the Kamogawa Boxing Gym. Born on September 9, 1971, in Tokyo, Japan, he stands 171 centimeters tall with an orthodox stance and an unorthodox boxing style. Aoki works as a chef at a Chuuka Soba restaurant when he is not in the ring.
Aoki had a troubled youth as a delinquent, frequently getting into street brawls alongside his close friend Tatsuya Kimura. This period of his life ended when he encountered Mamoru Takamura, a middleweight boxer with two wins at the time, who easily defeated him in a fight. Motivated by the loss, Aoki quit school together with Kimura and joined the Kamogawa Boxing Gym with the initial goal of landing a clean hit on Takamura. Over time, this rivalry evolved into genuine admiration, and Aoki developed a true love for the sport.
Personality wise, Aoki is playful, mischievous, and immature. He acts as a prankster around his gym mates and often provides comic relief through his exaggerated facial expressions and antics. Despite this lighthearted demeanor, he demonstrates considerable tenacity and heart in his matches. A long running gag involves his peculiar taste in women, favoring those considered unattractive by others, which stems from a past rejection by a beautiful girl during his adolescence. He maintains a stable relationship with his girlfriend Tomiko, whose friendship with Kumi often helps Ippo Makunouchi contact her more easily.
In the ring, Aoki relies on creativity and unorthodox techniques to compensate for his average boxing skills. He excels at improvisation, using psychological tactics to confuse and deceive opponents. His signature moves include the Frog Punch, a jumping punch that mimics a frog's motion, and the Look Away, where he deliberately averts his gaze to land a sneaky punch when the opponent drops their guard. He also occasionally uses a double punch and a corkscrew punch that lacks torque and is therefore ineffective. His fighting style has been described as one of the most unusual in the series, and it is believed to be inspired by real life boxer Emanuel Augustus.
Aoki's boxing record stands at 12 wins, seven by knockout, eight losses, and three draws. This places him as the fifth ranked lightweight in the Japan Boxing Commission. His most significant early achievement was a draw in a Japanese title match against then champion Imae Katsuka, which he earned through his clownish techniques. He later developed a rivalry with Papaya Dachiu, the lightweight champion of the Philippines, with whom he drew two consecutive matches.
A pivotal moment in Aoki's development occurs during his fight against Iga Shinobu, whose coach Kurita Baron is a former member of the Kamogawa Gym. Aoki suffers a severe defeat that lands him in the hospital. When faced with the option to retire alongside Kimura after their lengthy careers, Aoki refuses and becomes determined to stay in the lightweight class until he defeats Iga, whom he now considers his primary goal and rival. This decision demonstrates his stubborn resolve and growth as a fighter.
The central relationship in Aoki's life is his long standing friendship with Kimura Tatsuya, with whom he forms the Aokimura duo, a term coined by fellow gym member Manabu Itagaki. The two share a friendly rivalry and support each other through their boxing journeys. His relationship with Takamura transitions from initial hatred to respect as Aoki matures. He also interacts frequently with Ippo Makunouchi, often teasing him but also respecting his skills, and he takes part in the gym's daily training and comedic moments.
