TV-Series
Description
Haruka Hasegawa is a postgraduate student at the agricultural university and serves as an assistant to Professor Keizo Itsuki. Coming from a wealthy and over-protective family, she has a sophisticated background that influences her circumstances significantly; her family has arranged a marriage for her against her will, though the agreement stipulates that it will not take place until after she completes her doctorate. This condition is the primary reason she remains focused on her extended academic career.

In terms of personality, Haruka initially presents a harsh exterior and is often described by others as an ice queen or a dominatrix due to her temperament. She is short-tempered, no-nonsense, and somewhat sadistic, frequently resorting to violence or intimidation when annoyed. A notable quirk is her use of a whip, which she carries and does not hesitate to use on people, adding to her image as a haughty and domineering figure. Despite this formidable facade, her aggressive and cold personality is largely a mask to hide a genuine handicap: she is not very good at communicating with people, and her harsh demeanor serves as a defense mechanism to keep others at a distance. She is also deeply committed to the principles of science, which initially makes her extremely skeptical of unusual claims.

Within the story, Haruka holds the position of a senior and an authority figure among the students, acting as a foil to the protagonist, Tadayasu Sawaki. At first, she has great difficulty believing in Sawaki's unique ability to see and communicate with microbes, representing a voice of rational skepticism within the research group. Over time, however, she comes to accept this unusual gift. Her motivations are driven by a desire for independence and control over her own life, specifically to avoid the predetermined path of an arranged marriage. Her decision to remain in academia and pursue a doctorate is a direct act of resistance against her family's expectations.

Key relationships define much of her role in the series. She has known Professor Itsuki since she was in middle school, forming a long-standing mentor-student bond with the eccentric fermentation expert. She has a notably antagonistic relationship with the older students Kaoru Misato and Takuma Kawahama, whom she utterly despises and frequently chastises for their lazy and unhygienic habits. Her wardrobe typically consists of a lab coat worn over revealing clothing, a contrast that is frequently noted.

Throughout the series, Haruka undergoes significant development. Her character arc often centers on her struggle against her family's control, particularly a plotline involving her overbearing father and the introduction of her fiancé, Ryuta, who becomes a primary obstacle in her life. These conflicts push her into the forefront of the narrative in the second season, where her insistence on self-reliance is challenged, leading her to learn about the value of relying on others and working together. While she lacks the supernatural abilities of the lead character, her notable ability lies in her academic competence and her forceful, whip-wielding enforcement of discipline, which establishes her unique authority within the chaotic university setting.
