TV-Series
Description
Daichi Fuwa is a main character in the soccer anime Whistle! and a student at Sakura Josui Junior High School. He is a male teenager with black hair, worn to neck length, and black eyes. He is known by the fearsome nickname the Crusher, a reputation he has earned for his cold and analytical approach to competition.
Fuwa is initially portrayed as an aloof and eccentric genius who seems to excel at everything he attempts. However, he is severely lacking in basic social skills and has a deep-seated inability to understand the concept of simply having fun. His way of speaking is blunt and direct, often to the point of being cruel. He is infamous for crushing the pride and spirit of others by meticulously analyzing their weaknesses and beating them at their own game, seemingly without realizing how much he is hurting them. This behavior has made most people fear and dislike him.
His motivation for joining the soccer team is directly tied to the protagonist, Sho Kazamatsuri. The first time Fuwa ever played soccer was in a penalty kick session with Sho, where Fuwa acted as the goalkeeper. He observed that even though Sho kept losing, he was still clearly having a great time. Unable to comprehend why someone would smile after a loss, Fuwa decided to take up the sport specifically to find the answer to why soccer makes Sho happy. This intellectual curiosity about human emotion, rather than a passion for the game itself, is what drives him initially.
In the story, Fuwa joins the Sakura Josui soccer team after being inspired by a game against Musashinomori. He quickly assumes the role of the team's goalkeeper, wearing uniform number 1 for his school. His role evolves from a detached observer to a crucial defensive asset. His most important relationship is with Sho Kazamatsuri, who is the only person that never fears him. Sho's unwavering determination and genuine love for soccer serve as a catalyst for Fuwa's personal growth. Through Sho, and the rest of the team, Fuwa slowly begins to learn about trust and camaraderie.
Throughout the series, Fuwa undergoes significant development. He starts as a loner who interacts with others only to dissect their abilities but gradually becomes a more integrated member of the team. As people, following Sho's example, begin to trust him, he learns to temper his bluntness and finds value in teamwork. His talent is recognized beyond his school; he is later selected as a member of the Tokyo Select Team, where he wears jersey number 12.
Fuwas notable abilities lie in his analytical mind and physical prowess. Despite being a complete novice to soccer when he starts, his status as a genius allows him to learn and adapt rapidly. His primary skill is as a goalkeeper, where his ability to read the game and react quickly is put to use. He eventually earns a spot as the goalie for the Tokyo Select Team, stepping up when other players are injured. He seems to have a distaste for anything that cannot be explained scientifically, highlighting his reliance on logic and analysis over emotion.
