Description
Chi-Chi is introduced as the princess of Fire Mountain and the only daughter of the Ox-King. She first meets Goku during his childhood quest for the Dragon Balls, where her father's castle is engulfed in flames. At this young age, Chi-Chi is portrayed as a shy, timid, and fearful girl, a stark contrast to her enormous and terrifying father. Despite her nervous disposition, she possesses a pure heart, which allows her to ride the magical Flying Nimbus cloud. In a moment of childish misunderstanding, Goku agrees to marry her, believing a wife to be a type of food, and Chi-Chi holds him to this promise for years.

As she grows into adulthood, Chi-Chi undergoes a significant personality transformation. She becomes a strong-willed, outspoken, and fierce woman with a legendary temper. Her most defining characteristic is her role as an overprotective and strict mother, particularly to her firstborn son, Gohan. Haunted by Goku's own unschooled and dangerous upbringing, Chi-Chi is determined that Gohan become a successful scholar rather than a fighter. She prioritizes his academic studies above all else, often to a comical extreme, and becomes frustrated with Goku for dragging their son into life-threatening battles. Her frequent angry outbursts and nagging are legendary among the Z-Fighters, but they are always rooted in a deep, genuine love for her family.

Chi-Chi's primary role in the story is that of a grounding force, representing the normal, domestic life that contrasts with the increasingly cosmic battles fought by her husband. She is less concerned with saving the universe than with ensuring Gohan finishes his homework and that Goku finds a way to support the family financially. Her motivations are almost entirely centered on the well-being, safety, and future of her children and husband. She shows fierce, even irrational, resistance to Gohan training for fights against enemies like the Saiyans and Cell, but eventually shows a begrudging acceptance, allowing him to participate in the Cell Games and later the World Martial Arts Tournament, partly due to the significant prize money that could pay for college.

Her key relationships are the core of her character. With Goku, she is often exasperated by his naivety, obsession with martial arts, and lack of financial sense. Despite this, she loves him deeply, as demonstrated when she falls into despair upon learning of his death from the Heart Virus and is overjoyed at his recovery. Her relationship with Gohan is the most complex, defined by her desire to protect him from the violent path his father took. She famously forces him to study constantly and even hires a strict tutor, though she will fiercely defend him against any outside threat. With her second son, Goten, she is noticeably less restrictive and even trains him in martial arts herself, ensuring Goku would be proud of him, though she still values education. She also develops a friendship with Bulma, bonding over the shared, unique experience of being married to powerful and reckless Saiyans.

Chi-Chi's character does show development over the course of Dragon Ball Z Kai. While she remains fiercely protective and education-focused, she gradually becomes more accepting of Gohan's fighting abilities and his role in protecting the Earth. By the Buu Saga, she has softened slightly, allowing her sons to enter a tournament and showing pride in their strength, even if she would never openly admit it. Her love for Goku is also displayed more openly in later arcs, showing a deeper understanding and acceptance of who he is, even if she continues to scold him for his flaws.

Regarding notable abilities, Chi-Chi is far from an ordinary woman. As the daughter of the Ox-King, a student of Master Roshi, she is a highly skilled martial artist. Even as a child, she possessed superhuman strength, once decapitating a Tyrannosaurus rex while crying in fear. As a young adult, she competed anonymously in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, where Master Roshi himself praised her technique, noting it closely resembled his own. She was able to hold her own against a greatly suppressed Goku during their match. In her youth, she used a helmet equipped with a detachable boomerang blade and laser beams. As an adult, she relies on her martial arts skills and even trains Goten, teaching him kumite and the basics of combat. Though her power is insignificant compared to the Saiyans, she remains one of the strongest pure humans on Earth.
