Description
Android 18, known as Artificial Human No. 18 in the original Japanese, is a character who begins as a formidable antagonist before evolving into a hero and family woman. She is a cyborg, originally a human named Lazuli who, along with her twin brother Lapis, was kidnapped and forcibly remodeled by the mad scientist Dr. Gero of the Red Ribbon Army. Her primary mechanical components are a perpetual energy reactor and, originally, a self-destruct device, but her body is mostly organic, allowing her to age slowly and even have a child.

In the main timeline of Dragon Ball Z Kai, Android 18 is activated alongside her brother, Android 17, to continue Dr. Gero’s vendetta against the hero Goku. However, she shows little interest in following orders, and the twins quickly kill their creator to secure their own freedom. Her initial role in the story is that of a powerful and seemingly heartless foe. She demonstrates her overwhelming strength by effortlessly defeating Super Saiyan Vegeta, breaking both of his arms and leaving the Z-Fighters in despair. Despite her destructive capabilities, she displays a mischievous and unpredictable side, such as when she playfully kisses a terrified Krillin on the cheek.

Her personality is defined by a cool, confident, and sarcastic demeanor. Even after transitioning from villain to ally, she remains stoic and blunt, often speaking her mind without concern for others' feelings. She is highly pragmatic and motivated by self-interest, famously entering the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament solely to win the prize money and making a deal with Mr. Satan to let him win for a hefty fee. While she can appear cold and distant, she is fiercely protective of her family and those she cares about, revealing a deeply loyal and caring nature beneath her tough exterior.

The most significant relationship in Android 18's life is with Krillin. Her decision to kiss him, combined with his refusal to activate her emergency shutdown device when he had the chance, forms the foundation of their bond. After the battle with Cell, where Krillin ultimately wishes for the removal of her self-destruct bomb, she falls in love with him. They marry and have a daughter named Marron, and the family lives at Kame House. She shares a close bond with her twin brother, Android 17, though she often finds him childish. She is also deeply grateful to Gohan, who saved her life by kicking Cell so hard that he regurgitated her.

Android 18’s development is a striking arc of redemption and domestication. She transforms from a world-threatening artificial human into a wife and mother who, while still incredibly powerful, is more concerned with her family’s finances than with fighting. She notably declines to help fight Majin Buu, bluntly stating there is no money in it, yet she still warns Krillin to retreat if things become too dangerous, showing her priorities have shifted to his safety.

As a fighter, Android 18 possesses several notable abilities derived from her cyborg nature. Her most defining trait is her unlimited stamina, granted by a perpetual energy reactor, which allows her to fight at full power indefinitely without tiring. She has immense superhuman strength, speed, and durability, far surpassing standard Super Saiyans during her first appearance. She can fly, project energy blasts, and create protective force fields. While she cannot sense energy like most Z-Fighters, her raw power and inexhaustible energy make her a formidable combatant. Despite being called an Android, her human base and bio-organic enhancements are key to understanding her capabilities and her ability to live a normal life.
