Description
Kobayashi is a 25-year-old computer programmer at Jigokumeguri System Engineering Inc., living in Koshigaya, Saitama. She has bright red hair usually tied in a ponytail with loose bangs, hazel brown eyes described as "dead fish eyes," and wears glasses. Standing 160 cm tall with measurements of B70/W60/H70, her flat chest causes self-consciousness and envy towards more buxom dragons. Her office attire is a white button-up shirt, tie, and dark slacks; off-duty, she favors light blue button-ups, hoodies, yellow tees, or light-brown cardigans.
Both parents worked during her childhood, missing school sports festivals; she frequently requested burgers in elementary school. A drunken mountain excursion led her to find the wounded dragon Tohru. Kobayashi removed a divine holy sword embedded in Tohru's back, merging the sword's essence with her soul and granting it sentience; it now views her as a mother. Her lack of religious faith allowed safe handling despite warnings the sword harms others mentally. Grateful, Tohru transformed into a humanoid maid and moved into her apartment.
Kobayashi maintains a cool, stoic, pragmatic demeanor, serving as the voice of reason. Classified as "kuudere," she appears emotionally reserved but is fundamentally kind-hearted and reliable, helping others even at personal cost. Alcohol makes her rowdy, aggressive, and fixated on maids, often resulting in hangovers requiring care. She experiences chronic lower back pain from poor posture and avoids hijiki seaweed and eggplant.
Relationships are central. Initially chastising Tohru for disregarding human norms, she grew affectionate, holding hands and fulfilling wishes. She risked her life confronting Tohru's father, Damocles, to protect Tohru's choice to stay. Romantic feelings developed; in Chapter 97, she admitted liking Tohru romantically, accepting their undefined relationship as long as feelings were understood.
She took in Kanna Kamui, another exiled dragon who demanded Tohru's return, becoming her guardian and mother figure. Kobayashi worked extensive overtime to attend Kanna's school events and oversaw her studies. When Kanna's father, Kimun Kamui, took her, Kobayashi traveled to the dragon world to confront him, leading to his redemption after he respected Kanna's choice.
The household later included Ilulu, Tohru's former adversary. After helping Ilulu escape Clemene and learning her past, Kobayashi allowed her to stay, treating her like Kanna though often annoyed by her behavior and figure. Ilulu developed strong fondness, expressing a desire to have children with her.
Other dragons include Elma, a water dragon colleague from the Order faction, whom Kobayashi assisted with workplace and daily challenges. She bluntly described Quetzalcoatl's (Lucoa) outfit as "slutty" initially but gradually conversed more. She distrusts Fafnir yet tolerates him for routine matters. Her closest human friend is colleague Makoto Takiya, sharing interests in maids and butlers over drinks. She also looks after Shouta Magatsuchi at her manager's request.
Notable developments include sacrificing latent magic potential during a battle with Azad, channeling Kanna's stored power into a new dragon ball. This rendered her unable to perform magic but allowed absorption of the Holy Sword's superior power. Loki later removed this power during the Tournament of Arc. Temporary cat ears and whiskers resulted from half a day of consuming Tohru's magical medicine. Professionally, she secretly recorded her sexist boss foisting work onto others and abusing power; sending the evidence to the company president led to his dismissal.
