Description
The character known as Homura, also referred to as Kagari, is designated as Sekirei Number 06, a unique and powerful participant in the Sekirei Plan. Before the main events of the story, Homura was given a mission by a scientist named Sahashi Takami to act as the Sekirei Guardian, a self-appointed role focused on protecting unwinged Sekirei who had not yet found their destined partner, known as an Ashikabi. To navigate human society and search for a potential Ashikabi, Homura adopted the alias Kagari and worked as a popular and charismatic host at a nightclub, a profession that involved entertaining and seducing female clients. Despite many encounters, no woman caused a reaction, meaning none were his destined partner. For an extended period, only a few individuals, including Miya Asama, Uzume, Matsu, and Kazehana, were aware of his true dual identity as both the guardian and the host.
Homura's personality is typically calm, collected, and rational, often serving as a grounding presence among more excitable characters. Despite this outward composure, he possesses a quick temper, particularly when the subject is Minaka Hiroto, the enigmatic and callous Director of the MBI corporation that oversees the Sekirei Plan. Homura harbors a deep-seated hatred for Minaka, viewing him as someone who cruelly toys with the lives of Sekirei for his own amusement. His stated goal is to kill Minaka and bring an end to the Sekirei Plan, a resolve that remains unchanged even after his own circumstances shift dramatically. When anxious or stressed, he has a habit of smoking, often lighting his cigarette with his own fiery powers. A recurring source of his anxiety is his growing reaction to Minato Sahashi, a young man who becomes the Ashikabi to multiple Sekirei. Homura finds this reaction deeply troubling and stressful because it threatens his identity and forces him to confront his own unusual biology.
Homura's role in the story is multifaceted. He initially acts as a mysterious protector, intervening in fights to shield unwinged Sekirei. He is a resident of the Izumo Inn, a safe haven for Sekirei, where he lives under his Kagari persona. As the narrative progresses and Minato becomes more involved in the Sekirei Plan, Homura is revealed to be the last remaining unwinged Sekirei. This revelation triggers a massive manhunt ordered by the MBI Director. Desperate to avoid being captured and used as a trophy, Homura flees the inn and attempts to confront the Director directly. When overwhelmed and surrounded, he chooses self-immolation over capture, attempting to incinerate himself with his own uncontrollable flames. It is at this critical moment that Minato and his other Sekirei arrive. Unable to stand by and watch Homura sacrifice himself, Minato kisses him, the act required to "wing" or formally bond with a Sekirei, thus saving his life and making him Minato's sixth and final Sekirei.
The most defining aspect of Homura is his unique biology and the development he undergoes. He is a special Sekirei whose power and physical gender are inherently unstable. For most of his life, he identified and presented as male, but his body has the capacity to change. Before being winged, his body had already begun a process of feminization, causing him great internal conflict. After being winged by a male Ashikabi in Minato, this transformation accelerates; he begins developing more female physical traits, such as growing breasts. Despite these changes, his self-identity remains that of a man, though he acknowledges that this too may eventually change under Minato's influence. This internal struggle, trying to maintain his male psyche while his body becomes increasingly female, is a central part of his character arc, and a running gag involves him trying to convince himself that he is not attracted to Minato even as his body reacts instinctively. His key relationships are therefore central to his development: Minato is his life-saving Ashikabi and the cause of his physical transformation, while his fellow Sekirei at the inn, particularly the water-wielding Tsukiumi, are his allies and rivals.
In terms of notable abilities, Homura is a pyrokinetic, capable of creating, controlling, and manipulating fire at will. His name itself means "flame" or "blaze," directly referencing his power. He can shape his flames into various forms for attack, such as a serpent called Snake Fire, a dragon known as Fire Dragon, or a simple but powerful fireball. He can also form his fire into a sword named Sword of Flame for more direct combat. Before being winged, his powers were dangerously unstable and would frequently go out of control, threatening to consume him. Tsukiumi speculates that he was the strongest unwinged Sekirei, and even when at the point of a power-induced meltdown, he was able to hold his own against formidable opponents. After being winged by Minato, his powers become more stable, allowing him to use them effectively without the constant risk of self-destruction. His Chant, a powerful phrase used to terminate an opponent's bond with their Ashikabi, is, "These are the flames of my pledge, burn the karma of my Ashikabi".
