TV-Series
Description
Marina Ismail is the first princess of the Kingdom of Azadistan, a Middle Eastern nation beset by economic collapse following the completion of global solar energy pipelines, which rendered its fossil fuel exports worthless. Chosen by parliament to serve as sovereign due to her royal lineage, she was born into an ordinary household and accepted the position with the goal of restoring her country's stability. In the first season, she undertakes a diplomatic mission to seek aid from the AEU bloc but achieves little success, partly due to the interventions of the paramilitary organization Celestial Being. Her personality is defined by a deep and unwavering pacifism; she genuinely believes that all conflicts can be resolved through dialogue, understanding, and diplomacy rather than violence. This conviction makes her politically naive at times, as she struggles to contend with the harsh realities of global power politics and armed conflict. She is compassionate and empathetic, showing genuine concern for the suffering caused by war, and she remains steadfast in her principles even when they place her in difficult or dangerous positions. Her central role in the story is that of a moral counterpoint to Celestial Being's philosophy of achieving peace through armed intervention. Her relationship with Setsuna F. Seiei begins when she mistakenly intervenes on his behalf with British police, believing him to be a fellow Azadistani. Their subsequent interactions form the emotional core of her character arc. She challenges his worldview by questioning the ethics of using violence to eradicate violence, while he represents the practical necessity of force that her ideals cannot reconcile. Despite their philosophical differences, they recognize each other as kindred spirits who both seek an end to war, albeit through opposite means. Their connection deepens when Setsuna writes her a letter confessing this bond and his acceptance that their paths must remain separate. In the second season, after being suspected of ties to Celestial Being, she is forced into exile from Azadistan and travels alongside the anti-government resistance group Katharon, continuing to advocate for peaceful solutions even as the world descends into greater conflict. Throughout the series and into the feature film, her development is marked by a growing understanding that her pacifist ideals must coexist with the complex and often violent realities around her, though she never abandons her core belief in dialogue as the ultimate path to lasting peace. In terms of notable abilities, Marina possesses no combat or piloting skills; her strength lies in her diplomatic efforts, her ability to inspire others through her sincerity, and her symbolic importance as a figure of peaceful resistance. Her singing voice also carries thematic weight, appearing at key moments to provide solace and to connect with Setsuna on an emotional level.
