Description
Arthur Trine serves as the deputy captain and first officer of the ZAFT battleship Minerva in the Cosmic Era. A Coordinator born on January 4th, he is 26 years old and stands 172 centimeters tall. As second-in-command, his primary function is to act as an aide to Captain Talia Gladys, managing ship operations and assisting in combat command.

In terms of personality, Arthur is portrayed as a friendly and dependable individual who maintains a good rapport with the ship's pilots, including Shinn Asuka. He is known to be a reliable colleague to Captain Gladys. However, he notably lacks his captain's level of experience and tactical acumen. Consequently, he is often bewildered or confused by her more aggressive or seemingly reckless decisions in the heat of battle. He has a tendency to overreact to situations, making a mountain out of a molehill. Arthur also displays a practical, theory-oriented mindset, preferring to rely on established procedures, though he shows a willingness to learn from those with more combat experience, such as Athrun Zala. He can be somewhat oblivious to social cues; one example of this is when he awkwardly applauds Chairman Gilbert Durandal's praise of the crew at an inappropriate moment, drawing a rebuke from his captain.

Arthur's role in the story is largely that of a supporting officer on the bridge of the Minerva. He does not typically drive the plot but serves as a steady, if sometimes overwhelmed, presence during the ship's numerous engagements throughout the Second Alliance-PLANT War. His motivations are aligned with his duties as a ZAFT officer, focused on the successful execution of the Minerva's missions and the safety of its crew. His key relationships are primarily professional. His most significant dynamic is with Captain Talia Gladys, whom he respects and trusts, serving as her right hand and receiving her final orders when the Minerva is crippled during the Battle of Messiah. Some sources suggest he harbored personal feelings for her, though he described these feelings as being different from romantic love. He also shares a friendly, uncomplicated working relationship with the mobile suit pilots under his charge.

Arthur undergoes subtle development through the course of the war. While he begins as an officer who can be easily flustered and overly reliant on procedure, he demonstrates growth in his ability to handle crisis situations. During the intense operation to break through the Lohengrin Gate, he shows initiative by deferring to and learning from Athrun's practical combat knowledge, indicating a flexibility in his command style. By the end of the conflict, he has proven his reliability, ultimately obeying Captain Gladys's final order to evacuate and look after the remaining crew as the Minerva crashes. After the war, he is seen escorting the new PLANT Chairwoman Lacus Clyne, and in a later drama CD, he personally returns Captain Gladys's belongings to her son, showing a continued sense of duty and personal connection to his former captain.

As a deputy officer, Arthur's notable abilities lie in command and coordination rather than frontline combat. He is skilled in issuing combat orders from the bridge and is frequently responsible for briefing the mobile suit pilots before missions. As a Coordinator, he possesses the genetically enhanced physical and mental capabilities typical of his kind, which would aid him in managing the high-stress, complex environment of a warship in battle. Much of his presence in the series serves a secondary function, providing a degree of comic relief as a contrast to the more serious demeanor of Captain Gladys and the high drama of the pilots.
