Description
Birdy, known in the original Japanese as Torii, is a small robotic pet that appears throughout Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and its sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. Physically, Birdy resembles a small bird with a green and yellow body, silvery legs and neck, red eyes, and an orange beak. Its vocalizations consist of a simple, repetitive cry of its own name, "tori~ tori~".

Birdy was constructed by Athrun Zala during his childhood. The robot was created as a parting gift for his close friend, Kira Yamato, in the year Cosmic Era 68, when Athrun had to leave the lunar city of Copernicus to return to the PLANTs. The gift was a significant gesture of their enduring friendship, and Kira treasured it dearly.

In terms of its role and significance, Birdy serves as a powerful and poignant symbol of the bond between Kira and Athrun. Even after the two friends find themselves on opposite sides of a devastating war, Kira keeps Birdy with him at all times, often carrying the robot on his shoulder. The little robot acts as a tangible link to their shared past and the peaceful times they knew as children. This symbolic weight is highlighted in a key scene when Athrun, seeing the robot with Kira, asks about it. Kira's response, identifying it as a precious item from a dear friend, underscores that their personal connection endures despite their current roles as enemies.

Beyond its sentimental value, Birdy possesses several notable abilities that become important to the plot. It is capable of flying freely, even in the vacuum of outer space. Kira also equipped Birdy with a tracking feature, designed so that no matter how far it flew away, it would always be able to return to him. This feature proves to be crucial for survival. After a major battle where Kira is thought lost in space, the tracking device within Birdy allows Athrun and others to locate and rescue him.

Birdy remains with Kira throughout the First and Second Alliance-PLANT Wars. Its design proved influential, as Kira later built a similar robotic bird named Blue for his partner, Lacus Clyne. The robot's role extended into the film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, where the quantum connection between Birdy and Blue was used to locate Lacus during a rescue mission, demonstrating its continued utility as more than just a nostalgic keepsake.
