Description
Ame-Warashi is a spirit known as a rain sprite or rain maker, a being derived from Japanese folklore who appears in the anime and manga xxxHOLiC. Her true name, if she has one, is never revealed, as Ame-Warashi refers to her species.

Her physical appearance is distinctive and varies somewhat between adaptations. In the anime, her hair is red and styled into two large drill-shaped curls, while in the original manga and certain color illustrations by the creative team, her hair is shown as pale blue. In the Shunmuki arc, her hair is silver. Her eyes are typically brownish-red or silver-blue. Her attire consistently follows a gothic lolita style, featuring a long, puffy, black dress that ends at her shins, adorned with black and white laces. She also wears black Mary Jane shoes with lace-trimmed socks and is almost never seen without her signature accessory, a blue umbrella decorated with white lace, which she frequently uses as a tool for emphasis or aggression.

Ame-Warashi possesses a proud and haughty personality, fitting for a high-ranking spirit. She is highly opinionated, quick-tempered, and can be extremely rude, particularly towards humans. Her disdain for humanity stems from a belief that humans have no care or regard for the natural world and living nature. Despite this general contempt, she is kind and protective toward other spirits, forming a particularly close bond with the Zashiki-Warashi. She is often seen reluctantly chaperoning the Zashiki-Warashi when the latter wishes to visit the human world, pretending to greatly dislike the human protagonist Watanuki even while accepting his help. Her temper is easily provoked, and she will not hesitate to use her umbrella to strike those who annoy her, with Watanuki being a frequent target of her outbursts.

Ame-Warashi first enters the story by visiting Yūko Ichihara's shop with a specific request. She seeks help to save a location important to her: a park filled with hydrangeas, which are spirit flowers of significance to rain spirits. The body of a murdered child buried beneath the hydrangea bushes was poisoning the flowers, and Ame-Warashi’s motivation was solely to save the spiritual plants rather than concern for the human girl. This initial request establishes the transactional nature of her interactions with the shop, for which she pays a price, such as giving Yūko a kutakitsune, or pipe fox.

Her role in the story is that of a recurring client and a powerful supernatural entity. While not a main character, her appearances often drive key plot points and provide insight into the spirit world's perspective on humanity. Years later, following Yūko's disappearance, Ame-Warashi continues to interact with Watanuki, who has taken over the shop. On one occasion, he specially summoned her via a messenger bird to request a rare flower for making wine. Though she remained typically unimpressed, the conversation was more civil, and she was taken aback by his faith in her abilities and his recollection of something she had told him long ago, even parting with a rare smile. In xxxHOLiC Rei, she returns with another urgent request for Watanuki, this time concerning the red pearl, as the Zashiki-Warashi was in danger of disappearing. Despite knowing the price would be steep, she was prepared to pay it to save her friend.

Ame-Warashi’s key relationships are primarily with other spirits, especially the gentle Zashiki-Warashi, whom she acts as a fierce guardian for. Her relationship with humans is more complex. She openly dislikes Watanuki, berating and hitting him regularly, yet she trusts him enough to carry out her requests and continues to seek his help over the years. Her perception allows her to detect the special natures of other characters, such as the "refreshing" or "pure" scent she senses from the spiritually powerful Dōmeki, and her avoidance of the seemingly kind but spiritually dangerous Himawari. She also makes cryptic comments about Watanuki's true nature, suggesting she sees more in him than he presents.

As a rain sprite, Ame-Warashi has significant power over weather, particularly rain. Her ability is so potent that when she visits Yūko's shop, she must sit on a special piece of wood to prevent her rain from soaking the tatami mats. Yūko herself states that Ame-Warashi is far stronger than a common youkai, or demon, and Ame-Warashi becomes insulted when compared to lesser spirits. Beyond controlling rain, she can manipulate other weather phenomena, demonstrated when she constructed and animated snowmen in the shapes of the wind and thunder gods, Fūjin and Raijin, to alter the weather. She also possesses the ability to perceive hidden aspects of a person's character or spiritual abilities, as shown by her reactions to Himawari and Dōmeki.

Throughout the series, Ame-Warashi shows little to no physical aging or change in her fundamental nature. She remains a powerful, proud, and temperamental rain sprite whose deep loyalty to her own kind and begrudging, long-term association with Watanuki define her role in the supernatural narrative.
