Description
May Wong is a central character introduced during the second season of Kaleido Star, known as New Wings. She is a Cantonese-American performer who joins the Kaleido Stage as a rookie, bringing with her a background as a former figure skater. Upon her arrival, May harbors intense hostility toward Sora Naegino, blaming her for ending the career of her idol, Layla Hamilton. She declares herself Sora’s rival and is determined to surpass her in every way, initially pursuing the lead role in Dracula and later winning the Phoenix Ticket to become Leon Oswald’s partner. However, during the Circus Festival, May realizes that something vital is missing from the event, and she recognizes that Sora’s presence is that missing piece, which rekindles her ambition.
May’s personality is characterized by high confidence, ambition, and a brash, outspoken nature. She is fiercely competitive and often acts impulsively, but she also possesses a hidden warmth and a capacity for growth. Outside of performing, May is a talented cook, frequently sings quietly to herself while working, and has a habit of inventing whimsical names for maneuvers and everyday actions. She comes from a large family with many younger siblings who support her dreams. As the story progresses, May struggles to understand what Sora has that she lacks. Seeking answers, she enlists Cathy and Layla as coaches to help her obtain that elusive quality. Through a car show with Mr. Kenneth, May learns that while she focuses only on Leon or Sora’s reactions, Sora constantly watches the audience, prioritizing their enjoyment. This insight marks a turning point in May’s development, allowing her to become more considerate of others, including caring about Rosetta Passel’s role in Swan Lake.
Over time, May’s rivalry with Sora transforms into a deep friendship, and she eventually accepts Sora as a close companion. Her growth is evident as she learns the value of teamwork and empathy, moving from a sole focus on personal victory to a more collaborative spirit. Among her notable abilities, May creates a maneuver called the Demon Spiral, which she develops after spraining her shoulder and observing a sibling playing in the park. Her athleticism and creativity make her a formidable performer, and her journey from antagonist to ally is a key part of the series’ second half.
