Description
Greed is a homunculus, an artificial being created by the entity known as Father. His name is derived from the concept of avarice, and he embodies this trait as one of the seven Homunculi. He bears the Ouroboros mark, the symbol of his kind, on the back of his left hand. In his original form, Greed is a tall, well-built man with dark, spiky hair, a pointed face, and sharp, pointed teeth. He typically wears black clothing common among the homunculi, often accompanied by a dark jacket with a white fur collar and a pair of sunglasses.

Unlike many of his fellow homunculi who serve Father without question, Greed's defining personality trait is his intense desire for independence and his refusal to be controlled. This drove him to betray Father long before the main events of the story, leading him to establish his own base of operations and live on his own terms. He is flamboyant, confident, and hedonistic, openly declaring his desire for money, women, power, status, and glory. However, his greed is not portrayed as purely malicious or shallow. He is shown to value his possessions, which include his network of human-animal chimera followers, and he cares for them deeply, offering them a place of refuge and companionship when they had been rejected by society. This loyalty to his chosen family is a crucial part of his character.

Greed's primary motivation is simply to obtain everything he desires, which he sees as his fundamental right. This initially puts him in conflict with the protagonists, as he seeks to acquire an immortal body and the secrets of the Philosopher's Stone. However, his role in the story changes drastically after he is captured by the homunculus Wrath and brought before Father. Father destroys his original body but preserves his core essence, later implanting it into the body of Ling Yao, a young prince from the eastern country of Xing who seeks immortality. This event creates a dual existence where Ling and Greed share the same body, initially with Greed in control.

His key relationships are central to this development. His relationship with his host, Ling Yao, begins as a reluctant partnership but evolves into a deep symbiotic bond and friendship. While Greed provides Ling with his homunculus abilities, Ling offers tactical skill and, more importantly, a persistent influence that begins to change Greed's perspective. Greed also has complex relationships with Father, his creator, whom he resents, and his former chimera comrades. The death of his old friend Bido triggers Greed's lost memories to return, causing him immense grief and cementing his turn against Father for good.

Greed undergoes a significant character arc from an anti-villain to a true anti-hero. Initially appearing as a selfish antagonist, his rebirth in Ling Yao's body and the subsequent recovery of his memories lead him to ally with Edward Elric and the others against Father. His final development reveals that his deep-seated greed was always rooted in a desire for meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging. In a profound act of selflessness, he ultimately sacrifices himself to stop Father, thanking his friends and comrades as he disintegrates, proving that his evolved form of greed encompassed caring for the people he wanted to keep.

As a homunculus, Greed possesses several notable abilities. He has superhuman strength, speed, and stamina, as well as a rapid regenerative healing factor powered by the Philosopher's Stone within him, making him extremely difficult to kill. His unique power, known as the Ultimate Shield, allows him to rearrange the carbon atoms in his body to harden his skin into a substance as strong as graphene, making it nearly impenetrable. In this form, his appearance changes to a black, demonic-looking creature with red markings. While active, this shield can protect him from most attacks, though it can be temporarily weakened by skilled alchemists who alter the carbon's structure. He cannot use his shield and regeneration at the same time. After merging with Ling Yao, he also gains access to Ling's exceptional swordsmanship and his ability to sense the chi of other people, allowing them to switch control during battle to compensate for each other's weaknesses.
