Description
Mercury, also referred to as Merc, is a male Labrador Retriever who serves as the messenger dog for the Imperial Army State Section III, the unit known as the Pumpkin Scissors. His official rank is Courier Private First Class, though he was originally a Corporal before being demoted for biting an officer. That incident occurred when the unit encountered Major Connery, an officer whose demeanor provoked a strong negative reaction from Mercury; the dog bit Connery on the head and refused to let go, leading to the reduction in rank.
Mercury has a goofy facial expression and a playful demeanor with the members of Section III, but he possesses a serious side that emerges when the situation demands it. Commoners refer to him as a military hound or army dog, and he is capable of disarming opponents when necessary. His primary role in the unit is that of a courier, carrying messages quickly and reliably across the battlefield or between posts. He is notably fast and dependable, and he is highly sensitive to the emotions of his human teammates, often reacting to their feelings before they verbalize them.
Mercury’s motivations are simple: he is loyal to the Pumpkin Scissors and follows the lead of its members, especially Second Lieutenant Alice L. Malvin. He has no personal agenda beyond serving the unit and protecting those he considers part of his pack. His key relationships are with the entire Section III team, with whom he shares a friendly bond. He is particularly attuned to the moods of Alice and the other soldiers, and his biting habit, while troublesome, is often a reflection of his protective instincts or a response to perceived threats.
Notable abilities include his extraordinary speed and endurance as a runner, his keen sense of smell and hearing used for reconnaissance, and his capacity to physically disarm armed individuals. He can also intimidate adversaries by shifting from a friendly dog into a focused, aggressive military hound. Over the course of the story, Mercury does not undergo major personal development; he remains a consistent and reliable presence, acting as both a mascot and a functional member of the unit. His presence reinforces the theme of non-human companionship and the value of every member, regardless of species, in the war relief effort.
