Description
Dr. Zed is the narrative's primary antagonist. Originally a researcher for the Biotope Company under Chrom and Phossa Molybdenum, he studied the healing spring water in Okoya Forest. Their research pinpointed the Great Tree as the water's source. When Chrom and Phossa, discovering the tree's sacred status to a Zarude troop, suspended the project to seek a respectful alternative, Dr. Zed vehemently opposed them, arguing the healing power could save countless human lives and should not be delayed. Failing to sway them triggered a psychotic break, documented in a video log where he resolved to eliminate the Molybdenums to assume leadership and prove his methods right. He pursued their car, demanded their research data, and when they claimed to have destroyed it, ran their vehicle off the road. After Chrom and Phossa sent their infant son Al downriver for safety, Dr. Zed stole their water sample and left them to perish in the ensuing explosion. The infant was later found and raised by a Zarude named Koko.

Following this, Dr. Zed took control of Biotope. Over the next decade, he directed research teams, led by aide Sharon, in a fruitless search for the Great Tree. His opportunity came when Ash Ketchum arrived at Biotope headquarters with Koko, who possessed a pendant containing corrupted tree data. After confirming Koko's identity as Al Molybdenum and explaining his parents' alleged accidental deaths, Dr. Zed covertly placed a tracking device on the boy. This allowed him to follow Koko to the Great Tree with a research team, heavy vehicles, and a spider-like tank. Upon arrival, he ordered missile strikes on the tree to extract its energy, disregarding ecological destruction and his team's protests. Confronted by Ash and Koko, he captured them using his four Ariados' String Shot and imprisoned them, though they escaped. During the conflict, Dr. Zed ejected the tank’s pilot, took control, and confessed to murdering Koko’s parents. He battled destructively against Ash, Koko, and jungle Pokémon, dismissing their resistance as weakness. Defeat came when Pikachu disabled the tank's controls with Iron Tail. Fleeing, Dr. Zed was cornered by Koko near a river. After a struggle, Koko trapped him with a vine, leaving him dangling above the water. Based on his confession and video evidence leaked by Team Rocket implicating him in the murders, he was arrested, last seen glaring defiantly during transfer to police custody.

Publicly, Dr. Zed presented himself as a calm, reasonable scientist dedicated to human advancement via the spring's power. This facade concealed profound egomania, cruelty, and a willingness to commit murder and cause ecological devastation to achieve his goals. He held human supremacist beliefs, deeming humans inherently more deserving of the spring's power than Pokémon. His sanity deteriorated when challenged, leading to violent outbursts and public breakdowns, especially when subordinates questioned his methods. He showed no loyalty, readily sacrificing or discarding colleagues. Cowardice emerged in defeat, as he attempted to flee or even commit suicide to avoid consequences. Recorded evidence of his crimes, including the murder of the Molybdenums, underscored his lack of remorse.

Dr. Zed utilized four Ariados to immobilize opponents with String Shot. Beyond these Pokémon, his primary tools were technological, such as tracking devices and the heavily armed tank deployed to assault the Great Tree.
