Description
Kaname Kuran is a central figure in the vampire community, holding the status of a pureblood, which is the most powerful and aristocratic class of vampire. As the president of the Night Class at Cross Academy, he maintains a position of immense authority and is both respected and feared by the noble vampires who surround him. His public demeanor is typically calm, elegant, stoic, and authoritative, but this facade shifts dramatically in the presence of Yuki Cross, towards whom he is unfailingly gentle and warm.
His past is deeply intertwined with tragedy and ancient origins. While initially believed to be the brother of Yuki, his true identity is far more complex. Kaname is actually the ancient ancestor and founder of the Kuran family, reawakened into the world by a pureblood named Rido Kuran. This resurrection came at a terrible cost, as Rido sacrificed the real infant brother of Yuki to provide a body for Kaname’s soul. Consequently, Kaname was then raised as the son of Haruka and Juri Kuran, becoming Yuki’s adopted brother and, in keeping with pureblood tradition to preserve bloodlines, her fiancé.
Every action Kaname takes is motivated by a singular, driving obsession: the safety and well-being of Yuki. His greatest fear is losing her, having already experienced profound grief when a hooded woman sacrificed herself for him in his ancient past. This fear manifests as a contradictory personality; he admits to feeling a desire to lock Yuki away to keep her for himself, while also wishing to protect her and encourage her to be her own person. He is intensely secretive and often operates alone, keeping his true plans hidden even from those closest to him. He exhibits notable jealousy towards Zero Kiryu, a vampire hunter and fellow guardian who shares a strong bond with Yuki, and Kaname is not afraid to display this animosity. His love for Yuki is so profound that it persists even after he is later resurrected as a human with no memories, leaving him with only an unshakeable longing for her.

Following a time skip, his ultimate goal is revealed to be the complete destruction of the pureblood class, which he views as a corrupt and stagnant force. In a final act of atonement, he places his own heart into the furnace that creates anti-vampire weapons, sacrificing himself to protect humans and end the tyranny of his own kind.
