Description
Kurumu Kurono is a blue-haired, succubus monster who attends Yokai Academy, a school hidden from human society where monsters learn to coexist. She is introduced as a confident and flirtatious student, quickly becoming a rival to Moka Akashiya for the affections of the human protagonist, Tsukune Aono. Kurumu’s background as a succubus is central to her character: in her world, succubi are a matriarchal species, and by tradition, a female succubus must find a single lifelong partner. Without such a partner, her life force wanes, and she cannot bear children. This biological and cultural pressure shapes much of her early behavior.

Personality-wise, Kurumu appears vain, loud, and competitive, often using her supernatural charm to attract boys. She initially believes that securing a devoted husband is her only way to survive and fulfill her species’ destiny. However, beneath her boastful exterior lies genuine loneliness, fear of being unwanted, and a deep desire for love and family. She is fiercely loyal once her true affections are earned, and she shows a protective, caring side particularly toward her friends. Kurumu’s motivations evolve from pure self-interest in finding a mate to a broader goal of protecting those she cares about and proving her worth beyond her succubus instincts.

In the story, Kurumu begins as an antagonist of sorts, challenging Moka for Tsukune’s attention, but she quickly becomes part of the main friend group. Her role shifts to that of a comic relief character who provides emotional support and occasional combat assistance. Despite her rivalry with Moka, the two develop a complex bond that mixes jealousy with genuine friendship. Kurumu is also close with the other female characters like Mizore Shirayuki, with whom she initially competes for Tsukune but later shares a sisterly dynamic and even a signature combination attack.

Key relationships define Kurumu’s growth. Her unrequited crush on Tsukune remains a running theme, but she eventually accepts that Tsukune loves Moka, finding peace in her friendships rather than forcing romance. Her rivalry with Moka transforms into mutual respect, and she becomes protective of Moka as much as of Tsukune. She also forms a mentor-like bond with younger or less confident students, showing her maternal instincts, which are a core aspect of her succubus nature.

Development over the series is significant. Early Kurumu relies entirely on her charm power and physical allure, often failing because her targets (especially Tsukune) resist due to genuine love for Moka. Through battles and shared dangers, she learns that her value does not come from being loved by a man, but from her own strength and loyalty. By the second season or later arcs, she has matured into a brave, dependable ally who can fight with determination and sacrifice her own desires for her friends’ happiness. Her dream shifts from merely finding a husband to building a family of friends who accept her as she is.

Notable abilities include the succubus power of Allure, which allows her to mesmerize and attract others, often making them infatuated or obedient temporarily. She can also transform into a more monstrous form, gaining claws, wings, and enhanced physical strength for combat. As she grows, she learns to channel her charm into a projectile attack known as Succubus Kiss, which can paralyze or weaken enemies. Additionally, her wings grant her flight, making her a valuable aerial fighter and scout. In later battles, she combines her ice-based attacks with Mizore’s freezing powers for joint techniques. Despite her powers, Kurumu is not the strongest fighter, but her resilience, creativity, and emotional intelligence make her a key member of the group.
